Quail breeds are also commonly called wild. These birds are called the smallest representatives of the order of chickens and the family of pheasants. Body length is 16-20 centimeters, and weight varies from 80 to 150 grams. The feather colouration is yellow-brown with characteristic bright-colored speckles, and the belly is dark white. The male can be distinguished from the female by the color of the throat, which is clearly seen in the photo. In the male, it is reddish or dark brown, and in the female it is white.

Their nests are usually built in earthen grooves, covering them with bushes and lining with dense grass. The laying is in the middle of May and lasts for 17-20 days. It consists of 8-13 pear-shaped eggs of olive color, the weight of which is 10-12 grams.

Ordinary quail, with a rich vegetation ration, can be divorced in the farmsteads. They like to eat with greens and seeds of various herbs, in the summer they eat tasty mollusks and insects in large volumes. When placed in a cage do not cause inconvenience and does not require special conditions of detention. These birds are highly mobile and react violently to the approach of man.


On the territory of the Russian Federation, various breeds of quail are bred, including Japanese ones. The name determined the Japanese origin. It is not surprising that to this day of all types of these quails are especially valued in Japan. The second name is dumb.

Live weight of males is 110-130 grams, and females - 138-150. Individuals begin laying eggs from two months of age. During the year, about three hundred eggs can be laid, the average mass of which reaches eleven grams. Undemanding to their content regime and have strong immunity.

Silent quail prefer damp floodplain meadows and try to avoid high mountains. In the spring they can often be found in the marshland. In their natural habitat settle in pairs. Chinese quails are widespread in southeast Asia. After reviewing their photos, we can note the special beauty that often determines these birds as decorative. Body length is 11-14 centimeters, and the tail - 3.5.

The upper part of the body is brown and the belly is red. On the neck and chin are black and white drawings, so in the description of the breed they are sometimes called painted. The color of the beak is black, the limbs are orange-yellow. The body of the female is gray-brown and slightly lightened downwards. The ends of the feathers are dark brown.

They build their nests from leaves and dried grass on earthen plots, preferring to live in pairs. Egg laying takes place on grassy meadows. The male takes an active part in the process, vehemently protecting future offspring from possible danger. Five to seven eggs incubation lasts 15-17 days.


Virgin quails are medium-sized birds whose beaks are tall, short and compressed at their sides. The end of the upper mandible is curved, and the notches are located on the edge of the mandible. Limbs with sharp claws and do not contain spurs. Body color - red-brown. The length of the body reaches 22 centimeters, and the tail - 6.

By the nature of these quail appeasable. They do not require difficult conditions of detention and easily reproduce in conditions of captivity. Birds are placed in pairs in agricultural areas and meadows. The construction of a nest in an earthen recess covered with grass is started in May. A clutch can contain up to fourteen eggs, and the brooding process lasts 24 days.

Active artificial selection led to the appearance of variations of the virgin breed. The most popular are individuals with brown plumage and a white head. Today, birds are often bred in cages for meat or as decoration.


These quails are called the most famous representatives of the crested group. The beak of the birds is short and powerful, slightly bent. The body is compact and chunky. The limbs are long, the wings are wide and rounded. It is noteworthy that the fourth and fifth terry feather is slightly longer than the others. The tail has a stepped structure and shortened.

The laying of dark brown eggs consists of 9-15 pieces, hatching which lasts about three weeks. Females carry a sufficient number of eggs, but rarely agree to incubate them. Therefore, the resulting eggs are placed in an incubator, where chicks are raised artificially. They may be kept in packs, with the exception of the breeding period, when each pair needs privacy.

California quails feel comfortable at a warm temperature that does not fall below ten degrees Celsius. Therefore, in the cold period, the birds must be transferred to a heated room. Breeders are actively working to improve egg productivity.

English white

This breed was introduced to our country from Hungary in 1987 and is considered quite promising in its characteristics. English white quails have a white color, so they have a presentable appearance. Sometimes there may be several black feathers, seen among the light cover. The color of the eyes is dark, and the beak and limbs are white.

The mass of birds is determined by the interval from 140 to 180 grams. Egg production is 280 pieces, where the mass of one egg is 10 grams. Females lay eggs at the age of six weeks. The dimorphism of these quads is weak, which causes difficulties with determining the sex in the first weeks of life.

English black

English quail species have black feathers with a brown glimpse. The breed was bred in the UK by mutation of Japanese representatives. The live weight of English individuals exceeds the weight of Japanese quails, but their growth rate and egg production are lower. Proceeding from the productivity, this species is credited to quail egg.

Females are kept separate from males. To obtain hatching eggs, young animals that have reached the stage of maturity are grouped in pairs and placed in separate enclosures. Further rearrangement may reduce the percentage of hatching eggs.


The name of the breed led to an unusual color, resembling a tuxedo in appearance. The lower part of the body, along with the head and neck, has a snow-white color. The upper part is dark brown. It is impossible to distinguish between a female and a male in terms of plumage, since it is absolutely identical.

This species was obtained as a result of the selection of white and black quail. The head, wings and back are of dark color, and the stomach is sometimes white. The weight of males reaches 160 grams, and females - 180. Egg productivity is about 280 units per year.
