Mularda hybrid ducks - a find of a modern farmer

Many owners of personal plots are interested in what kind of ducks the mularda, which arose just a few years ago. Generally speaking, this is a kind of hybrids of ordinary domestic musk ducks. However, they have their own characteristics and striking differences. What kind? About this just we will talk.

Breed overview

If you first hear about such a breed of domestic ducks, it is not surprising, because it originated quite recently. More precisely, it was artificially brought out by a person in order to improve some of the qualities of known species of domestic birds. Ducks of the Mulard breed, as official sources indicate, is an interspecific hybrid created on the basis of a musk duck and several other breeds (Orpington, Beijing White, Rouen).

As a result of the crossing of the known ducks, the poultry farmers received a new meat breed that meets all modern needs put forward for this type of poultry. They are not only productive in terms of meat, but also provide valuable fatty liver, which, by the way, along with goose is used for the famous dish of Fuagra. This is an ideal duck for both domestic and industrial cultivation. But more about that later.

External characteristic

So, the Mulard breed is often referred to as "mulatto". This is quite an attractive bird with a white color and one bright distinguishing feature - a black speck on its head. Today, birds can also be found with a variety of plumage color. It already depends on what breed the crossed fathers were, that is, the males of musks. For more details on how Mularda look, look at the photo.

It is important to know

Perhaps the following information will seem strange and even a little incomprehensible. The fact is that the ducks of the Mulard breed do not give offspring. Females are infertile and although occasionally they can carry eggs, the chicks do not hatch anyway. This has already been proved by numerous experiments. How so? Yes, it happens that a bird is sterile in terms of progeny. As they say, they are single-season, that is, they bought a chick - raised - eaten.

The correct logical question arises - how do the offspring of these birds get, where do they come from? The answer, it turns out, is very simple. Mulardas appear after crossing a musk duck and a female of another domestic breed. Most often used Beijing White. But you can also take the female of an ordinary domestic white bird. See the photo.

Growing up

So, if you need a good source of healthy and lean meat, and still want to have a delicious gourmet liver, then this duck is what you need. It remains only to figure out how to grow it. To date, there are two ways to get this bird. The first is to buy chicks. The second is to cross a musk duck drake and a peking female, or, conversely, a musky female with a Peking drake. It is better to produce offspring under the hen, but it is also possible in an incubator.

The first thing to take care of is the temperature. In the first 5 days, babies, if they are not with a hen, should be indoors near a heat source with an air temperature of 27-30 degrees. After a week of age, the temperature is reduced to 18 degrees. Hay or straw can be chosen as a litter, but not sawdust, as ducklings can peck at them. It is also necessary from the first days of life to provide offspring with round-the-clock coverage, gradually reducing to 11 days to 16 hours. If it is warm and sunny outside, you can let out little ducks.

In the first days of life, the ducklings themselves do not understand how and what to eat. Therefore, if you have already bought daily babies, drink them immediately with a weak manganese solution. Then give soft boiled porridge with mashed hard-boiled egg. From the third day you can add greens, and from the tenth - boiled potatoes.

It is important to know

Mulara drink a lot of water. At the same time a sufficient amount of fluid affects their growth and even health. Therefore, from the first days of life, birds should have constant access to clean fresh water.

Adult birds

Today in the market you can buy and already quite an adult bird. It is best, as experience shows, to contain ducks in small sections of 4-6 females with one drake. You can also keep the females themselves. For the maintenance of even a small number of birds you need to have a special summer building with a free-range aviary. The room must fit the size: one square meter per three heads. Calculate the size of the enclosure based on one square meter per individual.

By the way, the walking platform is very important for the maintenance of these ducks. The fact is that they really need grass and having a sufficient amount of greenery can grow even without the usual "duck" feed. With good nutrition, by the age of three months they gain weight up to 4 kilograms, and by five months - 6 kilograms, as in the photo.

Feeding ration

As we have said, little mulardy do not know how to eat on their own in the first days of life. Therefore, they sometimes need to be forced to feed, water and pour food directly on their heads. That way they will miss everything that moves. About a day later they will begin to eat independently. These days they need to give a wet mash of porridge and tough eggs. Fresh greens should begin to give from the third day old.

Lemna plays an important role in the diet of ducks of this breed. If there is a reservoir nearby, birds can be released from two weeks of age. If not, try to collect it yourself. It is an excellent source of valuable substances for growth and duck health. Up to a month babies are fed three times a day, after a month they are transferred to a two-time regimen. In order to achieve good weight gain, you can feed the feed, for example, like broiler chickens.

In a separate trough you need to pour the shell, limestone, chalk. It improves the digestion of birds. The entire feeding ration should be expanded gradually, smoothly moving from the mash to the grain. Meat and bone meal, meal, baking yeast are also useful. In principle, everything is the same as other domestic ducks.

In this case, mulardy do not gain excess weight, everything is spent on building muscle mass, and not in fat. Feed mulardy usually up to 60 days, rarely up to - 90. But in the interval, that is, in 70 or 80 days of age, the bird is better not to slaughter. At this time they have molting, they lose weight and lose muscle mass.

Reviews breeders

In many sources you can find such information that the mulardy will become a real decoration of your poultry yard. And what about this breeders themselves say? Consider reviews.

  • The first thing that duck owners say in their reviews is that they really benefit from their rearing. They grow very well and gain weight. Already by 7-10 weeks of age, with proper feeding, farmers receive a weight gain of one and a half kilograms.
  • The second plus is the nature of the birds. Mulard very calm, clean ducks. They are easy to maintain in the garden even without an aviary.
  • Incredibly delicious liver - a very frequent review.
  • Fattening faster than geese and all domestic ducks. At the same time for them less used expensive feed, such as corn.
  • Mularda have strong health and well adapt to any climatic conditions.
  • Unpretentious in the feed, eat everything they give.

Perhaps the only negative is that it is impossible to breed a bird by the usual way of breeding. That is, when I bought chicks once and then get offspring from them. But such a feature of these hybrid ducks. Not everyone knows about this and often usually awaits offspring from their female's eggs. Therefore, we hope that our article will be useful and interesting for you. Successes!
