It is better to understand what constitutes an English thoroughbred horse in two ways. First, look at its English name - Thoroughbred translates as "perfectly derived." Secondly, it is enough to look modern racing. As you already understood, this breed is not easy and we offer to know all its features and secrets with us.

Breed overview

Faster than the wind racing horses on the racetrack, it seems that they are about to take off and the earth will leave from under their hoofs. Hot blood, a strong heart and unsurpassed agility - these are the main features that distinguish purebred riding breed from all others. Today this horse can be called not only the main property of England, but also of the whole race horse breeding. After all, this is the standard, which until now has no equal.

Initially, this breed was called, as the English horse, but having received worldwide popularity, the name was adopted new. It also indicates special requirements for such racers. The word "purebred" means the complete absence of the tide of any other blood. Purebred can be called only that horse, whose parents are also purebred. If in the family at least once there were tides of other breeds, the horse is not allowed to participate in official races.

Creation selection

We must not forget that the thoroughbred riding breed is a product of a very strict breeding and hard work of horse breeders. Moreover, it can be said with confidence that this horse is the creation of horse racing, since its productivity is associated with training, careful selection, feeding and rearing. Today this horse is the most high-spirited, it is able to cover a distance of 1 kilometer in just one minute. But the average speed of these horses is about 60 km per hour.

Origin

Today, this breed of horses is referred to as a thoroughbred horse, but the question arises, how did it come about ?! Let's say that the blood of the Arabian racers is dominant in her veins, since at that time they were the most frisky in the world. The breed was bred at the turn of the XVII-XVIII centuries and is derived from the Eastern stallions Darley-Arabian, Beyerley-Turk and Godolfin-Arabian. These horses were crossed with local horse mares.

Interesting! Today it is difficult to judge whether the stallions were pure Arabs. For example, Russian hippologies claim that Akhal-Teke's blood flows in thoroughbred horses.

The resulting offspring were tested in horse racing, bred in closed form, strictly controlling the performance and further purity of the breed. Starting from 1793, a breeding book has been kept, taking into account all the lines and all the horses that are being born. As a result, over the years of hard work, experienced breeders managed to get a unique horse in all respects. It combines only the best qualities of oriental breeds and race agility. The breed was officially approved and declared in 1821.

Appearance

The first thing that strikes the eye of this horse is its considerable growth, tall, dry limbs and the harmonious combination of long lines and square format. Height at withers on average is about 165-170 cm. The head is dry, with a straight, even profile and an elongated muzzle (see photo). This allows the animal to make a big gas exchange while running. It is important to note that all these horses are folded in such a way that implies high speed.

The neck of a thoroughbred horse is long, straight, rather thin. High withers allow you to make a high span of the limbs and well articulates the front and rear of the body. The back is mostly straight with a long oval-shaped croup. An important detail of the exterior - wide deep chest, which is the main indicator of riding horses. This form allows you to place a large heart and voluminous lungs.

Limbs dry, tall, with powerful tendons. The hooves are small, but with a strong stratum corneum. Also, the riding purebred breed has a thin mane, often a rather scanty tail and no brushes. The coat itself is very short, so the veins and muscles are clearly visible under the skin. See more photos and videos.

As for the color, then there are most often dark, for example, bay and Karak. They are also red and rarely gray or black. There are no other stripes in this breed.

High requirements

Despite the fact that today the English horse breed is one of the most frisky, very high demands are made on it. All horses are evaluated not only by external examination, but also by internal. The work of the heart and lungs is checked first. Experts examine the structure of the body of the animal, the skeleton, the muscular system, the correctness of the movement. Then strength, speed, endurance, temperament are estimated. To participate in horse racing, a horse must be inscribed into the stud book of General Studbuka from 1793.

Born for horse racing

The whole structure of the English thoroughbred body speaks of its purpose. For example, her heart is much larger and stronger than the heart of an ordinary horse. It weighs approximately 6 kilograms. At rest, the horse's pulse reaches 60 beats per minute, and during rapid racing it rises to 140 beats. Also, the thoroughbred is much more voluminous lungs, which makes them a wide and deep chest.

English horse in the world

After the first line of thoroughbred horses was obtained in England for the first time, they were bred for a long time exclusively in this country. However, the popularity of horse racing increased the fastest breed as well. After just a few decades, the best horses began to appear in France, Sweden and other European countries. Today, thoroughbred horse breeding in many countries around the world and is used not only for racing, but also as an improver of other breeds. The most famous and prestigious races are held in England, France, USA, Eastern countries, Canada and Australia.

When crossed with other horses, purebred English give their growth, developed muscles, dryness of the body, bone density and energy. Thus, on the basis of this breed, famous polo ponies were obtained in Argentina. These small horses are frisky and light, which distinguishes them from other similar ones. Also, the blood of the “Englishmen” flows in a well-known standard dugout breed, Budenovsky, in French trotters. Almost all riding breeds have improved qualities due to a thoroughbred horse.

Thoroughbred in Russia

For the first time the elite thoroughbreds appeared in our country at the beginning of the development of the breed. In 1825, the official race community was formed and the first both state and private factories for the breeding of horses appeared. According to the data for 1885 in Russia, competitions among English breeds were held on 10 of the most important hippodromes. And since 1886 in Moscow, the main prize for three-year racers has been held - the Big All-Russian Derby. By the end of the 19th century, there were already about 1,700 thoroughbred horses in Russia.

The best racers were not only bought abroad, but also displayed in their own country. For example, in 1908, the famous stallion Floreal was received at the stud named after Lazarev. His son Tagore today gave the best line of thoroughbreds. However, the civil war has caused irreparable damage to the breed in our country. After its completion, only slightly more than 400 horses of breeding value were on the balance sheet. Resumed the best representatives of the breed Marshal of the USSR S. M. Budyonny.

At the beginning of 1920 the famous stud farm "Voskhod" was built, it was here that the best representatives of the breed were born. These horses showed outstanding results all over the world. This includes the record holder Zakaznik, the winner of the European Cup Aden and, of course, Anilin - the best race horse of Russia. Today in our country the same horses are bred at stud farms of the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, as well as in the Caucasus. At the Moscow Hippodrome, the best thoroughbreds of the country are regularly tested.
