Everyone knows how beautiful, soft and warm products are made of rabbit fur. However, in order to get such a pelt, you need to know a lot of subtleties and secrets of its manufacture. Especially if you do it yourself and for the first time. They will help you find out how the rabbit skins are dressed at home and our tips.
How to remove the skin?
To make the skin whole, it must be properly removed from the dead animal. The process is quite simple, but it requires its clear sequence and caution.
- First of all, the rabbit's carcass is hung by the hind legs with its head down. The paws are tied with ropes just above the joint, and the ropes are fixed so that the legs of the crawl are separated.
- Below the joint, a circular, shallow incision is made with a sharp hunting knife. From each paw in a circular incision is carried out with a knife to the middle of the back of the animal.
- The skin is pinched, taking the fur with his hands in the area of the legs towards the genitals. Be sure to make an incision in the inside of the coccyx so as not to damage the bladder.
- Then continue to pull down, reaching the front paws.
- The fingers then need to push as if inside the front paws. This whole procedure is rather difficult, so don’t worry if the process is slow.
- After you have reached the skin to the nape of the carcass, it is necessary to separate the head from the body with the same sharp knife. So in your hands will be the skin entirely with his head.
- The front leg joints break or are notched in a circular motion, after which the fur should come off easily if you pull it hard enough. Further, the carcass head is simply cut off, and you have in your hands the entire fur surface of the crawl from the rear joints to the front ones.

Learn to properly dressing hides
The dressing of rabbit skins is the process by which the raw fur part taken from the carcass is subjected. This can be done at home, knowing the phased technology. Next, we will take a closer look at all the steps of dressing and learn how to use them in order to get a beautiful, shiny fur. In the video at the end of the article, you can familiarize yourself in detail with how to make rabbit skins. You will also learn what substances to use for storage and preparation for methropathy (separation of fat and skin parts from fur).
The dressing of rabbit skins must go through nine important steps. These are conservation, washing, fleshing, washing, degreasing, pickling, laying, tanning and greasing.
What to do immediately after removal?
Immediately after removal, it is recommended to remove excess fat and muscle. They are scraped with a sharp knife, but very carefully so as not to damage the base. For scraping usually use a special wooden bar-pig. At this timber pull the skin and carry out sliding movements in the direction from the tail down. The fresher the raw materials, the easier it will be to remove all residues.
If you are not engaged in dressing immediately, you should preserve the resulting fleece. It is placed with fur inside on a special wooden rule or stand in the shape of the letter "A". The device should have a crossbar to expand or narrow the base. Bottom of the skin is fixed, so that there are no folds and the fur is not prel.
Prepared fur raw materials are left in a dry room with a temperature not higher than 30 degrees away from heat sources. Next, the surface on the back side is rubbed with ordinary table salt. After complete drying, fold or hang in a cool, dry storage space. It is better not to store the blanks for a long time so that the moth will not spoil them.
The process of soaking is necessary in order to make the fleece suitable for sewing or other manipulations. To do this, at home you can prepare a special solution. Mix one liter of water, 50 grams of salt, 30 grams of borax, 2 grams of crystallized carbolic acid. Acid can be replaced with two tablets furatsilina or sodium bisulfate in an amount of 2 grams.
Next, pour the solution into a stainless, enamelled or glass container. The skins are laid inside, pressing down with a load so that they do not surface. The water level above them should be at least 2 cm, and better and more. The entire process can take from 6 hours to 4 days. The fresher the material, the better it will be soaked. If the raw material is ready, you can determine this by the softened core.
A full-fledged dressing of rabbit skins is impossible without removing the skin remains and fat (fleshing). At home, the surface of the skin is quite easy to handle, especially after proper soaking. After being removed from the solution, the surface is rubbed, the remaining fat is removed, the muscles are removed, the upper layer of the core is removed. Next is a breakdown - tapping on the surface.
Washing and degreasing
These manipulations are carried out after frustration. On a liter of water put 4 grams of any washing powder, wash the resulting "material" by hand. Mezdra will turn white and begin to creak, it is a sign that you need to put the mass in clean water. Next, put the skins in a soapy solution. It is prepared from laundry soap (10 grams) per liter of water.
Next, wash the material until it squeaks, and then rinse in clean water. After that, you need to walk on the surface of the skin with a stick, extruding all the water. At the end, blot with a clean, dry cloth.
Dressing rabbit skins coming to an end. Pickling is a treatment for higher strength. Pickling solution: 15 ml of acetic acid plus 30 grams of salt and a liter of water. In this solution, the raw material is kept for several hours. Checks the readiness of the "fur blade" by bending. If a white stripe appears on the fold and it does not disappear for about 5 seconds, everything is ready, you can reach it.
Laying down and tanning
Laying down consists of pushing, folding the fur out and placing it under the yoke. After the pelts have been laid down for about 12 hours, it is recommended to rinse them with soda solution (a tablespoon of soda per 1 l of water). This neutralizes the remaining acid.
Tanning is carried out in oak, willow bark or twigs. Bark can be bought at the pharmacy or collected from the trees with his own hands. A pack of bark is boiled in a liter of water, add 2 tons of liquid for this amount of liquid. spoons of salt and cool. This solution can be simply applied to the core with a brush. After that, the skins are folded with fur outside, left for a day to lie down, and then dried.
The final stage of processing - walk on the surface of the core with sandpaper and carry out the grease. So skins of rabbits will be soft and velvety. It will only conduct fattening. For these purposes, a mixture of chicken egg yolks and glycerin is prepared (mixing them in equal amounts). The mixture is applied to the smooth part of the fleece, left to dry.
Then you will only stretch the skins, rub the back part with chalk to absorb the fat and comb the fur. Store fully treated fur must be in fabric bags. There you can put dry lavender, so that the mole does not start.
