Ornithosis in pigeons is an extremely serious and dangerous disease that is caused by chlamydia and affects the respiratory system. Today this virus is found on all continents of the world and more than 150 species of birds are exposed to its negative effect. How to protect your pigeons, we learn together.
What kind of disease, ornithosis?
Ornithosis, or as it is also called, chlamydia of birds is a disease caused by the activity of the intracellular microorganism chlamydia. Today, many still say that this disease is caused by a virus, but scientists deny this, arguing that ornithosis is treated with antibiotics.
In virtually all species of known birds, the "virus" is able to accumulate in the cells of the respiratory tract, being released outside through droppings and respiratory secretion. At the same time, the complexity of the treatment and destruction of pathogens lies in the fact that they tolerate drying and even freezing well, retaining all pathogenic properties for 40-60 days. In the poultry litter can be up to one week.
Today, such desparatami as bleach, phenol, formalin, caustic sodium, chloramine and carbolic acid are most effective in the fight against ornithosis. All these solutions in the right concentrations kill the virus within 30-50 minutes.
How is it transferred?
All birds, including pigeons, can be both carriers of microorganisms and have an acute form of the disease. At the same time, when exposed to negative external factors, for example, cold, avitaminosis, poor nutrition, infection, ornithosis easily transforms from “sleeping” to the acute form. Therefore, this disease very quickly wanders from bird to bird. If the conditions of keeping birds are not observed in the pigeon house, they have a massive avitaminosis or poor nutrition, as a rule, the disease affects everyone without exception - the so-called character of local epizooty.
As for the transmission of the virus from birds to humans, this fact exists, although it is slightly exaggerated by the mass media. Infection, for example, from pigeons to humans can be transmitted by respiratory infection. If you have a quarantine in the house, the birds are sick with ornithosis, you should protect yourself with cotton-gauze bandages or the usual "petal". Sick or untested individuals should not be brought close to the face and, after contact, observe increased personal hygiene measures.
At the same time, in the western countries of Europe and the USA, birds that are already sick with ornithosis are not destroyed, but treated. This is a significant shift in our modern medicine, including in veterinary medicine.
What are the symptoms of the disease?
So, ornithosis most often affects exactly pigeons. Chicks in the first day of the disease appear symptoms such as diarrhea, shortness of breath, they can suddenly die at the age of 24 weeks. This is a reason to panic to the owner of the birds and check your flock for the presence of ornithosis. Sick young birds grow poorly, they have poor plumage, poor appetite.
In adult pigeons, ornithosis of the symptoms is manifested by the presence of a runny nose, the presence of wheezing and difficulty breathing, there may be conjunctivitis, profuse tearing. Sick birds also lack appetite, digestion is disturbed, diarrhea, paralysis of legs and wings appear, as seen in the photo.
In addition, sick birds sneeze, shake their heads, as if wanting to get rid of nasal secretions, they often choke and make noises wheezing. After a few days without proper treatment and care, the bird is very depleted and dies.
How to treat?
Earlier all pigeons and other birds, sick ornithosis, destroyed to prevent the development of an epidemic. Today, this disease is already treatable. As a preventive measure, special quarantine measures are being taken, improving immunity in the young, maintaining proper sanitary and hygienic standards in pigeon houses. The newly acquired pigeons are kept for a month in a separate room in quarantine. If no symptoms of ornithosis are found, only after that the bird is released into the flock.
If the bird is sick, apply the following measures:
- tetracycline drugs are used for treatment, for example, nifulin-forte, which is suitable for single and group treatment with food;
- disinfection of dovecote and all inventory;
As for the drug Nifulin-forte, it is given with the calculation of 20 grams per 1 kilogram of feed with the addition of sunflower oil. They feed pigeons for 5-7 days.
After treatment with a course of antibiotics, the bird must undergo a course of microflora restoration. For this you can use gamavit, chiktonik and arguing. It is best to disinfect the pigeon house with a formalin solution or hot 2% soda solution.
In order to prevent the bird should regularly give immunomodulatory drugs, as well as to enrich the feed with vitamin A, E and D3. Antibiotics biomitsin, ampicillin, oxytetracycline and terramycin can be used as drugs for ornithosis. For more information about the symptoms of this disease, also learn from the photos and videos.
