Dutch Egg Cross - Chickens Shaver

Breed, or rather cross, chickens Shaver Brown, the description of which we give in this article, appeared on the market not so long ago, but has already gained popularity among farmers. And what a poultry farmer will not rejoice at a chicken carrying almost 350 eggs a year? And this is with a small feed consumption, unpretentiousness and docile disposition. We offer to get acquainted with this bird and its varieties closer. Perhaps you will find it worthy of content on your site.

Breed overview

Chickens shaver belong to the direction of egg productivity. This mobile and small chicken is a typical hen in nature, ready to boast with almost record egg production. It is possible to keep and breed it for the sake of eggs both in large quantities for profit, and on a small farm for yourself. But as a source of meat, it does not suit at all, as it has a very small weight and is not very tasty.

The advantages of this breed include the fact that, according to the description of the owners, it is a calm and friendly bird, which does not start fights in the hen-house. Therefore, it is often placed in an open-air cage with other non-aggressive breeds. Unlike many breeds of layers, shavers are also not very shy, although they are quite nimble.

History of origin

Specialists of the Hendrix Genetics Company, which is located in Holland, were engaged in developing this viable cross-country with high egg production. Their task was to bring out the bird, completely absorbed in its task: to lay a large number of eggs and incubate future offspring. They managed to realize this task to the full - the egg cross shaver really rushes well and sits on the laying itself.

Depending on the color of plumage, the breed is divided into shaver black, shaver white and shaver brown. Accordingly, these chickens are black, white and brown. Brown subspecies among brown feathers can have white spots, especially visible on the tail and on the wings.

Since this breed was bred for its productive qualities, it is not particularly decorative. It is a small neat bird, with dense plumage. Males from chickens can be distinguished already at the age of one day by the speed of their playability. So, laying hems are covered with down faster, and on the back they draw two stripes of darker color, as can be seen in the photo.

Some more characteristics of this cross:

  • shaver, regardless of color (shaver, brown or black) - a strong and muscular bird with an expressive rounded chest. Roosters have a particularly proud posture, which immediately catches the eye, while the hens have a voluminous belly;
  • on the average length of the neck is the head of a bird with a strong beak of yellow color. The eyes of these chickens are large and expressive, but the dark brown iris slightly dims with age;
  • The comb in birds of the shaver White, Brown, and Black Leaf-shaped forms is well developed and painted in bright red. In chickens, it usually falls slightly to the side, whereas in roosters it stands on its head exactly. A close-up of the comb can be seen in the photo below;
  • bird earrings are round, medium size, painted to match the comb. White, Brown, and Black White are the lobes of the variety;
  • legs of all varieties of shaver are non-feathered, of medium length and strong. Usually in young animals they are colored yellow, whereas in the adult bird they are white or have a bluish tint;
  • the tail of the males of this breed has long feathers and is strung up more strongly than in the layers.

According to the owners, the performance indicators for different types of this cross-country are slightly different. As for the shaver of white, then this bird averages 355 white eggs per year. Provided proper feeding, the first laying of this layer usually takes place at the age of 5 months. The eggs of this bird are rather large, about 60 grams and are distinguished by a strong and smooth shell. The period of productivity - up to 80 weeks.

But the weight of this chicken is quite small: at the age of 18-weeks, its weight is only 1.3 kg, and by 80 weeks of age the hen usually weighs a little more than 1.5 kg. This once again proves the irrationality of using it as a source of meat. The shaver is distinguished by its white and high preservation of young animals: 96-98% of individuals survive and perfectly adapt to the environment and the vagaries of the climate.

Shaver Brown has even higher numbers, therefore it is the most popular subspecies of this breed. Egg production in this chicken is almost a record: a hen is able to produce up to 400 tons of eggs, weighing 55-65 grams per year. Brown begins to sweep at 4.5 months, and marriage in clutch is very rare. Yes, and weighing a brown chicken a little more white - at the age of 52 weeks, the hens usually gain a mass of 2 kg.

According to the description of the owners, shaver Brown is the most unpretentious chicken from its "kin". Its ability to survive allows you to save up to 94% of adults.

Black chickens, or shaver black, are the largest representatives of this cross. Their weight can reach 2.5 kg, and their productivity is as high as that of Brown. The average egg weight is usually 62 grams, and the survival rate is slightly higher than that of brown birds: 95%.

Features of the content in the private sector

Unpretentious and calm, for good egg production, these chickens need not so much a volumetric, as in the proper diet. This can be either a production feed or homemade mixers with a caloric content of 2900 kcal per kg of bird weight. According to farmers, laying hens usually consume 100-120 grams of feed per day and it is important that the protein in it is about 16-18%. This will help the birds to form a large and sturdy clutch.

Proper nutrition will help avoid such an unpleasant illness as cannibalism in the house. From the lack of any elements in the diet, birds can begin to peck at each other, pinching feathers and pecking eggs.

Intolerant breed and drafts. This is especially true for young animals, therefore, they should be kept in a dry, wind-proof place, giving them more warmth in the sun. In winter, the birds Brown, White and Black must be kept on a warm bedding. And take care of a sufficient number of nests! How interestingly one of the farmers of the canal arranged the nesting place for their birds; you can see the main farmer portal FERMER.RU in the video below.

Owner reviews

According to the owners, this bird is worth keeping it in the yard. Owners make a joke that it would not be too much to buy a large net, since it can be difficult to catch this quick bird. The big plus to the description of the breed is the ability to keep it in cages, which will help save space for the house. As minuses, the owners indicate that individuals carrying large eggs eventually have problems with the oviduct.
