How long does a cow carry a calf or how long does a pregnancy last? This question is asked by very many beginning amateur livestock breeders. Of course, like any animal, a burenka during pregnancy also needs increased care and attention. And knowledge about the duration of its “special” position will help to correctly calculate the time of delivery and prepare for the birth of a baby.
What is the gestation period for cows?
Pregnancy of a cow, or how correctly to speak, pregnancy, lasts nine months or approximately 285 days. However, you should know that the animal, like a person, can not carry or carry a calf. This happens infrequently, but still such a case should be taken into account. For various reasons, most often because of poor conditions of detention, the Burenka may not be informed for several days or even a month. The calf can also carry the calf for several days and weeks.
The entire period of pregnancy lasts differently and depends on several factors: care, the individual characteristics of the animal, the breed, early maturity, and even the sex of the calf. As for the latter fact, it is proved that heifers are born 1-2 days earlier than gobies. Poor nutrition and underfeeding can increase the duration of pregnancy by 10-12 days. On average, the period is considered to be from 240 to 311 days.
Calculate the date of birth
Knowing the date of insemination, any pet owner can easily calculate the approximate time of delivery using the following formula:
O = (D + 10) / (H-3)
Here O is the date of birth, D is the date of fertilization, H is the number of the month of insemination.
For example, if a cow was fertilized on June 17, then it is easy to calculate using the formula that the date of birth falls on March 27.
O = (17 + 10) / (6-3) = 27 (day) 3 (month).
How to know that the animal is pregnant?
This is another important point to determine the duration of pregnancy. After all, you need to count the days exactly from the moment conception took place. But how to understand that the animal is already walking with the fruit? There are several methods.
- Sum up to the cow a bull several times. If an insemination has occurred in the previous mating, the female will no longer hunt. Such research is called reflexological.
- Conduct a laboratory study of milk. To do this, take a sample on the 20th day after mating.
- Five to six months after mating, the fact of pregnancy can already be accurately determined by an external method. For this it is enough to examine and feel the animal from the side.
It is important to know the exact duration of pregnancy in order to start the cow, that is, to stop milking. Experts advise this period to begin two months before birth. In this case, the whole deadwood lasts an average of 60 days.
How is the pregnancy going?
Pregnancy is an extremely important period in the life of any female. As for the cow, the sexual maturity of the young chicks comes to a year, at about 8-9 months. But this does not mean that the animal is already ready to produce offspring. In cows, this is determined not by age, but by weight. On average, it is believed that they reach physical maturity around the third year of life. During this period, their weight is about 60% of the weight of an adult individual.
Starting from 5-6 months of different sex animals need to be kept separately, this will prevent possible premature pregnancy. But young males are allowed to mate in the household only from the age of 20-22 months, bulls earlier - from 14-18 months. It is important to note that there is no season for pregnancy, so cows can happen at any time of the year.
The entire sexual cycle of the cow lasts 21 days. This period includes two main stages:
- Hunting - the first stage, which takes place in females from 11 to 18 hours. During this period, the animal is ready to mate and is in emotional and physical arousal;
- Ovulation - occurs after the end of the hunt after 10-15 hours.
Animals are inseminated in a natural and artificial way twice before milking 12 hours later. This allows not to miss the most favorable moment for conception. If a cow showed a hunt in the morning, then it is better to inseminate in the morning and evening, if in the afternoon - in the evening and in the morning of the next day. If during the next 28 days the female does not show any desire, it means that she is pregnant or pregnant. As a rule, females produce into the world in the year of one baby, less often two.
Little about lactation
We all understand that a cow gives milk only because her body perceives the need to feed the offspring. Therefore, for successful lactation, the animal must be inseminated every year. Milk in young calves appears after childbirth, in dairy adults may be before birth. In the first 10 days after birth, cows give colostrum (thick, full-fat milk to feed calves).
The whole process of lactation in dairy breeds is 9-11 months with regular milking, in meat - 7-9. After the dry period, the animal happens again. After the subsequent delivery, the milk appears again. For more information on pregnancy, childbirth and calf rearing, read our following publications.
