Like any other animal, a pig sometimes has a situation where a mother cannot feed her offspring. How to feed piglets without a sow in such a situation? Is it possible to give baby milk powder? The answer to this not simple question can be found further from our article.

Let's say right away, in view of some features of newborn piglets, it is recommended to feed sows with colostrum at least for the first three days. If you compare colostrum with cow's milk, it contains an order of magnitude more protein and dry matter. Its digestibility is almost 100%. Also, with the colostrum from the sow, the pig gets the immunity he needs in the first days of life.

But nevertheless, if there is no colostrum, what then, do not let the little ones die? Of course not! There is always an alternative, though not as good as real colostrum. Special mixtures are used for feeding, which, without any special difficulties, with the presence of the necessary ingredients, can be prepared by yourself.

In addition, you can use a mixture based on diluted milk powder. To learn how to use and dilute it, you can check with the seller in the Veta pharmacy or read the instructions that should be in the package. You will also need a special device for feeding, because newborn piglets still do not know how to drink from a bowl or other capacity and they definitely need a mother's nipple.

How and what to feed?

There are a lot of reasons why a sow cannot feed its babies. Seasoned pig breeders can immediately name at least three of them. The first and most common is when more pigs were born than a mother can feed. The second is the loss or shortage of milk in a pig. The third is the death of a sow after giving birth due to some complication. With a mother’s lack of milk for all babies, not everything is as scary as it seems.

After all, you can simply alternate the young and in this way, though not in large numbers, but everyone will get the colostrum. Between this, you can feed up with some kind of whole milk replacer for piglets or other mixtures, or cow's product. Then the survival rate of suckers will be quite large. But if the suckers do not receive colostrum in the first hour of their life, then most likely the percentage of mortality will also be very high. But experienced breeders have found a way out from this situation.

Colostrum Substitute

In the case when the sow does not feed its piglets, you can prepare a colostrum replacement yourself. Also, this product is perfect for additional feeding of pigs, which did not have enough milk. So, then two recipes for this product.

What to feed?

So, with what feed suckling pigs we have already figured out. Now the question remains, how to feed them or, rather, what? Especially for such cases, you can build a fairly simple structure. For it, you will need several pieces of metal pipes, nipples, an adapter and a plastic tank for colostrum.

  1. First you need to take a 1.5 m piece of pipe with a diameter of about 80 mm.
  2. Then, every 10 cm along the entire length of this pipe, holes are made in a row for pipes of smaller diameter. There should be about 13-14 such holes.
  3. Next, we take pieces of metal pipes with a smaller diameter (their length should be no more than 20 cm) and weld them to the holes made.
  4. We put plugs from both ends on a half meter pipe.
  5. We attach the legs to the pipe, so that the pipes welded in a row are on the side. The height of the structure on the legs should not be more than 12 cm from the floor surface and the design should be placed horizontally to the floor.
  6. We put nipples on sticking ends of pipes.
  7. From above, we attach an adapter to a plastic container to a large-diameter pipe, from which then an artificial mixture will be supplied.

Pigs are planted to such a feeder from the very first day. Fed so up to five times a day. After each feeding, the feeder is washed with hot water and cleaned. It is possible to feed pigs from it up to two months of age. It is also convenient to feed from it not only artificial milk substitutes, but also various medicinal infusions and diluted feed additives. Thus, breeding pigs becomes much easier, because the main risk group is piglets up to one month of age, and with such a design problems with their feeding should not arise.

Optional fixture

For greater similarity with the nipples of the sow, you can cover the structure with soft rubber. Some craftsmen thought of attaching a speaker with a timer to the feeder. With the help of such dynamics, the sounds of the mother of the pig are published, who call their children to eat. When the sounds subside, feeding stops. Thus, the construction as much as possible replaces the mother of the piglets. But also remember that if there are a few suckers, then you can feed them from a simple plastic bottle on which the nipple is put on.
