Chickens - birds unpretentious, so their maintenance at home is an easy task. But still there are some nuances that every farmer should know, especially if he has decided to start his own small business.
What chickens need for a favorable existence:
- proper nutrition;
- maintaining cleanliness;
- the extension of the daily regime in the winter-autumn period;
- periodic prevention of diseases of chickens, especially young.
For optimal return of chickens, it is necessary to feed them correctly and in a timely manner. Especially this rule applies to young. Since the correct diet will allow you to grow faster and, accordingly, young chickens will start to nest faster. To begin with, it is necessary to work out the correct balanced and regular diet of the wards. Then it should be remembered that in the fall and in winter the bird needs more vitamins and minerals.
Better for feeding fit natural mixtures and feed. You should also not forget that feeding egg breeds is different from feeding meat. The first ones should receive food 3-4 times a day, and the second ones should always have full feeders. Then memorable about drinking bowls. Access to them must be permanent.
In summer, the water in the drinkers should be a little cool, and in the winter - a little warm. Ice water in winter can cause a cold in chickens. Also, be sure to monitor the purity of water in drinking bowls. If it is dirty, it can lead to various diseases and reduce egg production.
It should always be remembered that access to the feeders and drinkers should be in all chickens. If the size of the chicken coop allows, it is better to arrange several feeders and poilniki around its perimeter. The fact is that some chickens are very aggressive and may keep their calmer fellows from eating or drinking. Accordingly, they remain hungry and stop rolling, and additional feeders and drinkers help to avoid this.
The coop must always be clean.
One of the main conditions for proper keeping of laying hens is the constant maintenance of the purity of the hen house. Cleanliness will help not only get rid of most possible viral diseases, but also improve their egg production. The number of mandatory cleaning in the chicken coop depends on the time of year.
When the floor content of the floor is covered with a thick layer of straw or Tyrsa. Lime is often added to it. It helps to lower the humidity in the chicken coop. Cleaning such a chicken coop means replacing the flooring with a new one. This procedure is not complicated and does not take much time, even in large pens.
In spring and summer, the birds spend a lot of time on the run. Therefore, to make cleaning is not difficult. To maintain cleanliness, it is enough to make the replacement of the flooring no more than 2 times a month. In the autumn-winter period, increased humidity is observed in the hen house. Therefore, the procedure for replacing the flooring should be up to 4 times a month at least.
It is worth remembering that even in winter with severe frosts, chickens need to be released for walking, about 1-2 hours. This time is enough for cleaning. It also helps reduce humidity and ventilate the coop well. Thanks to this walking, egg production will remain stable. It should also not forget about the feeders and drinkers. At the slightest sign of contamination, they need to be washed.
We keep egg production
In the fall, often, the hens begin to nausea badly, and in the winter they generally stop doing this. The reason for this is the short day and lack of lighting in the hen house. It must be remembered that during this period the chicken spends most of the time inside the chicken coop. Therefore, in order to continue egg production, it needs additional lighting.
When installing additional lighting for chickens, several rules should be observed:
- The light should not be too bright. Such lighting will annoy chickens and they can start pecking among themselves.
- The light should flash and fade out gradually. Sharp and bright flashes will introduce a chicken into a stressful state. And as you know, with frequent stress, they also cease to be carried.
- Light should not be directed to roost or nest. Such lighting will also annoy the hens and then we will not see eggs.
We carry out regular prevention of diseases
The most common problem of domestic chickens are parasites. They contribute to the deterioration of appetite and reduced productivity, and often even cause the death of the chicken. Such a problem is solved very easily. To avoid it, chickens should always have abundant ash. Bathing in it perfectly solves the problem with parasites. Maintaining constant cleanliness in the hen house helps prevent their occurrence.

Where is better: at home or at the cottage?
Proper maintenance of chickens provides for a chicken coop and space for day-walking poultry. Therefore, if you can not provide such conditions at home, it is better to keep the birds in the country.
What about sharing content with ducks?
You can keep chickens in the same pen with ducks, but only if you have a large pen. If the space is small, and the birds are plentiful, then the competition and the struggle for a place near the feeders and drinkers will begin. Also, be sure to keep apart chickens, ducklings and young. But still, if space permits, it is recommended to make a partition between ducks and chickens.
The content of the ducks is always bordered by high humidity. Hens do not tolerate high humidity. Therefore, if the number of ducks is too large or the place is small, it is better to keep them apart.
Chickens and rabbits together?
Keeping chickens and rabbits together is possible, but not recommended. There is also an opinion that they do not have common diseases, so together they are not in danger. This is not the case; those and others may have salmonellosis and coccidiosis. But still, if the space is large and the rabbits are kept separately in cages, then this option is possible.
Together with another bird?
If these are ducks or geese and there are not many of them, and the corral is big enough, then you can keep them together with chickens. But it will be right to separate them from chickens by partitions or to make another corral. The total content of turkeys and chickens will not lead to anything good. And if you conceive, apart from chickens, to breed partridges, pheasants and other birds, then you should immediately take care of a separate pen. The diet and housing conditions of this bird are very different from those to which chickens are accustomed.
