Birds belonging to the duck family are the favorite object of hunting and home keeping. One of the species of birds that live in the wild and can breed in household conditions is the wild duck.
What breeds are there?
The most popular and common in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and neighboring countries duck breed Mallard. This is a small bird, the weight of which can be as much as 1.5 kg. The male is always slightly larger than the female, however, when fattening before the autumn departure, the weight of the ducks may increase. The photo clearly shows the differences between different genders of the same species.
In addition to the mallard, the gray duck is quite popular throughout Europe. Very often inexperienced hunters or amateurs confuse her with a previous member of the duck family. The modest, inconspicuous color makes this duck invisible in the reeds and near the coast, where it nests. By the way, it was the gray duck that was taken as the basis for the character of the famous fairy tale "Gray Neck".
This breed is very loved by breeders and hunters, perhaps because of its unpretentiousness and resistance to cold. By the way, the ration of ducks is also very diverse and unoriginal, but we will tell about what they eat and what to feed them.
There are many species of ducks, for example, such breeds as the Mandarin Duck, Lutok, Scaly Rohal, Red-Nosed and White-eyed Pochard duck are listed in the Red Book. Their capture is prohibited by law and such ducks usually live, fearing only poachers. Smart hunters will not touch them, because they know how important these birds are for the fauna of the area. On a par with the benefits, they demonstrate and external attractiveness. In particular, the mandarin duck is very pretty, as the pictures with this bird allow to make sure.
Among other species of wild ducks, the following breeds can also be mentioned: Gogol, Teal-whistle, Treskunok and Klochtun, Sviyaz, Peganka, Chernet tufted, Shirokononka, Pintail. Be sure to say about the dive of the Baer, Savka, Sea ebony and Ogari. Experts say that this is not a complete list of representatives of the wild duck breed.
What eat in nature?
As we have already mentioned, the wild duck is a beautiful bird, primarily because it is very useful for the fauna of the earth and the observance of eco-balance. Their diet in conditions of habitat is standard for river birds: they eat small fish, fry, aquatic vegetation, and in summer their main diet is mosquito larvae. Due to the fact that the birds eat the larvae, parasites do not multiply uncontrollably.
Thus, the duck eats, helping both the nature, and people. Its main diet in summer consists of algae, phytoplankton and various herbaceous plants on the water. Depending on the area, food may slightly change the composition. For example, a bird can eat wild crops - buckwheat, barley, millet. In addition, birds dig up tubers of meadow and lakeside plants from the ground.
It is important to know that to feed the ducks that live in winter reservoirs, than it is impossible to! For example, categorically you should not give the birds black bread type "Borodinsky". If you want to feed them, let's eat stale white bread, small fish, special feed (it is on sale). Remember that wild ducks should not be given sweets or foods like chips, store crackers with flavors. Under natural conditions such products are extremely harmful for birds!
What to feed the bird at home?
At home, you need to feed a wild duck not at random, but by observing the usual diet for it. This is necessary so that the birds do not have difficulties with the digestion of unusual foods. You can give feathery greens of the river, for example, distichlis, sea rupee, and dried sea kelp. For pets that previously lived in nature, ready-made feed is well suited. The main point is to clarify for the seller that your birds belong specifically to wild representatives of the breed.
