Psoroptosis is a disease that provokes the ear mite in rabbits. Microscopic insects cause discomfort and pathological processes in the body of an animal. Ears are particularly vulnerable and, thus, attractive to parasites. The disease progresses rather quickly. It leads to the death of the sick individual, if the treatment is not started on time. About how you can get infected, how to treat eared, complications and prevention, we will tell in this article.
The ear of the rabbit attracts small insects - ticks. They choose the inner side of this part of the body of the animal, where there is no coat.
Ticks in rabbits that can be found in the ears are very tiny. They are difficult to distinguish without a magnifying glass. Insect sizes from 0.2 mm to 0.8 mm. Body shape is rounded with a yellowish color. They actively reproduce in the rabbit auditory organs and gnaw there passages in which they lay eggs. Parasites feed on earwax and the secretion of the sebaceous glands. These processes cause inflammation due to the integrity of the tissue.
Rabbit psoroptosis most often occurs in individuals at four months of age. If the rabbit has this disease, then the young increase the chance of becoming infected. An adult animal can also catch a tick.
If there are no rabbits infected with psoropathism, the tick can crawl from other domestic cats or dogs. A person can bring parasites on clothes. From it, they also climb into the ears of animals.
When parasites are brought from the street, they can live on different objects. With them, the mites also crawl onto rabbit ears in the process of playing or any contact. The auricle is the most favorable place for these microorganisms. There they multiply, causing serious complications, such as otitis, meningitis and brain tumors.
Insect parasites in particularly advanced cases can affect the front paws, but they do not pose a danger to humans.
The defeat of the tick in rabbits is accompanied by loss of appetite (and as a consequence, weight loss), refusal of breeding and feeding of the young. The behavior of animals changes instantly from the moment of infection.
The first 5 days with the advent of the tick, the disease goes unnoticed. This is because he begins to act deeply in the area of the external auditory canal. This makes it difficult to make an early diagnosis, since the ear seems to be quite healthy, and the rabbit shakes its head only slightly.
Then there is a strong itch - the main symptom by which psoroptosis can be determined. Animals begin to shake their heads and scratch their ears in every possible way - against the walls of the cage or paws. This leads to blood combing.
The wounds in the ears of rabbits become similar to the red bumps with succinic secretions. Scales and purulent-sulfur crusts are formed. They are provoked by biting and scratching.
Ears become hot and thickened. Appearance suggests that the disease is progressing. If a lot of discharge has accumulated, including crusts and sulfur, then all this can block the ear canal and lead to hearing loss.
The animal is not even able to keep the ears straight. Of them, an unpleasant smell. When a rabbit has a strong degree of mite damage, the coordination of its movements is disturbed. He becomes indifferent to any external stimuli.
Looking under the magnifying glass
Laboratory or home diagnostics can help determine whether there is an ear mite in rabbits. In the first embodiment, you need special equipment that allows you to quickly make an accurate diagnosis. For this you need to take scraping from the inflamed ears of baby rabbits.
Sometimes it is necessary to conduct a cytological examination and examination of the middle ear otoscope. When the inside of the auricle is affected, an x-ray or computed tomography may be necessary.
To understand that a rabbit is scratching its ears from a tick, you can use the second option - to conduct an independent study at home. To do this, you need petroleum jelly, a tool that can be used for scraping (not sharp, but thin), glass to which the scraping is transferred and a magnifying glass (if possible, a microscope).
First of all, scraping is taken from the ear. Next, vaseline must be heated to 40 degrees (approximate body temperature of rabbits). Content from the auditory organ is embedded in petrolatum and transferred to the glass. In the warm substance, insects (if they exist) begin to move and can be seen under a magnifying glass. This means that ear scabies in rabbits is progressing.
Separate the healthy from the infected
If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment should take place simultaneously with the accompanying actions. Infected rabbits are immediately isolated from healthy ones. Otherwise, the parasites will very quickly reach their goal.
The next step is to clean the cage and nearby places, as well as the dishes. It is desirable to sterilize. After all, sick krols scratch their ears, from which the surrounding areas and objects are sown with mites and their eggs.
Ear mites are able to survive without an animal for about three weeks. It all depends on the conditions - wet, warm or cold. In order not to infect healthy individuals, the inventory is disinfected. For cells suitable 10% bleach solution or ash lye. These funds are applied to all elements of the cell and the walls of the room. After that, the inventory must be washed with running water.
It helps to cope with parasitic larvae, eggs and insects by burning wooden cells with fire. This is carried out by a gas burner to achieve a brown shade of wood, preventing its ignition.
With proper treatment and cleanliness, you can disrupt the life cycle of ticks, because their eggs live only 28 days.
Now about how to treat rabbits. Funds purchased at the pharmacy, effectively help get rid of the ear mite. It can be aerosols, injections, drops. These include:
- "Ivermectin" ("Ivermek") - a preparation for subcutaneous injections with an active ingredient, ivermectin is toxic (dosage of 1% of the drug is 0.02 mg per 1 kg of weight);
- "Otodectin" is a more benign ivermectin-based subcutaneous injection (0.2 ml dose per 1 kg of body weight), most often used for small animals because of its ease of dosing;
- "Stronghold" is an external agent with the active ingredient selamectin, which is contained in pipettes (6% solution - dose 0.1 ml per kg of animal, 12% solution - 0.05 ml / kg), applied to the skin at the withers;
- "Butox-50" is a solution for irrigation of the ears, which must be diluted with water (1 ampoule per 1 liter), the active ingredient of deltamethrin (the ears and the nearest places to them are treated with rabbit; after 4-5 days, the treatment is repeated);
- "Dekta" - ear drops with chloramphenicol (dose of 3-5 drops in each ear).
Means and solutions intended for the ears of rabbits should be slightly heated to body temperature before use. Otherwise, otitis media may develop.
For rabbits, medications cannot be used as therapy in which the active ingredient is fipronil.
We continue therapy
Aerosols have become very popular in the fight against tick infestations. Most often they splash twice. In parentheses are the intervals between the first and second treatment. These are “Psoroptol” (10 days), “Akrodex (from 6 to 12 days),“ Cyodrin ”(7 days), and“ Dermatosol ”(re-injected in 5-7 days). Spray is sprayed 20 cm from the rabbit's ear in literally two seconds
When treating with an aerosol agent, Dicresyl may be used. If the mite damage is not strong, then one irrigation is enough. With a strong infection, the treatment is repeated after 7 days. However, after 3 days from the first injection, the peeled crusts must be removed. On the fifth day, the treatment is repeated, and after another 4 days the remaining crusts are removed.
If the defeat of the rabbits is massive, then the injection group will do. Slaughter for meat can be made not earlier than three weeks after treatment.
When psoroptes in rabbits have already provoked the appearance of crusts, they should be removed before local treatment, removing them as delicately as possible. Hydrogen peroxide or a mixture of turpentine, kerosene and vegetable oil will be suitable for cleaning. These tools will help get rid of parasites and in the initial stage, even without medical treatment.
After processing and softening the crusts, they are collected in a separate container. This container must then be burned, as there are many ticks in the scabs. You can pour bleach - it will be disinfection.

Home remedies in ears
Treatment of ear mite in rabbits can be carried out with the help of traditional medicine. As already mentioned, it can be a mixture of vegetable oil and turpentine (2 to 1). Camphor oil also helps a lot.
Any of these mixtures must be collected in a syringe without a needle. Camphor oil is not diluted by other means. Rabbit ears are treated first once. Excess solutions need to wipe with a napkin.
Camphor oil or other oils (vegetable, corn, baby, mineral) can be applied with a swab on the inside of the rabbit ear. Repeat procedures are repeated every other day, up to 10 days. The next treatment should be on day 14, 21 and 28 days.
Tea tree oil can be added to the above options as an antiviral, antibacterial and antiseptic. This will accelerate the healing of wounds in the ears.
Antiparasitic treatment should be carried out with gloves and try not to touch other parts of the body or clothing with the rabbit. It is desirable that this work is constantly carried out by someone alone.
To prevent infection with psorioptic rabbits, you need to take care of the purity of the cells. They must be dry. Dampness and drafts adversely affect animals.
If the livestock is kept on the street, then the cages should be under a canopy, and they should be cleaned 2 times a day. Food and nutrition will help strengthen the immune system of animals.
Regular inspection of the population of rabbits will help to recognize the disease at an early stage. If the female is suckle, then she is examined two weeks before giving birth. When a sick rabbit is found, it must be removed from the main herd. All new individuals are kept in a quarantine place for up to 3 weeks.
Disinfection of cells, equipment and premises should take place at least twice a year, if no diseases were detected, and immediately, as soon as a tick infection was detected.
If the cells are on a wooden stand, then it is painted or treated with engine oil. It is undesirable to use straw for bedding, as it is a good shelter for insects. It must be remembered that ticks are much easier to cure than complications such as brain tumors and various inflammatory processes in the rabbit.
