Spring audit of bee colonies is a very important and obligatory procedure at each apiary. It is an integral part of beekeeping.

Description

Revision, in our case, means inspection or, in other words, care for insects, with further identification of problems and their quick correction. That is, you need to conduct a spring inspection of the bees. It is a mandatory procedure. Thanks to him, you will identify the condition of your insects after wintering. Also in the course of this procedure, it is necessary to create optimal conditions for the further development of bees.

So what must be done during the inspection? The first is to replace low-quality food and add food to those families that have very little of it left. The second is the determination of the strength of families, the quality of the queens and the amount of brood. And the third is the identification of the sanitary condition of hives after wintering, their cleaning and other work.

All work is carried out in the spring, after the removal of the bees from the winterers and their cleaning fly. Some beekeepers recommend auditing those hives that did not go to the flight or those who lost the uterus, immediately after the cleaning flight. But the majority is inclined to wait until the yard warms up to + 10-14 degrees. It is believed that at this temperature during a quick inspection (no more than 10 minutes per family), the chance to harm the insects is very small.

How is it done?

We begin the inspection of families who have obvious problems. Such problems are indicated by the fact that the bees did not come out for a cleansing flight or lost the uterus, then they would run and look for something. Now that you have decided on the inspection sequence, you can begin it. To do this, open the hive by removing the roof and quickly, but carefully, inspect its contents.

It is necessary to accurately determine the presence of seeding and whether there is enough feed. After what kind of food and whether it is not necessary to replace it. At the end of an assessment of the strength of the family. When carrying out all work, removing or raising each frame is not recommended. If you have a lounger, then to find out everything will be enough to rearrange the frame a little to the side. In the case of vertical house structures, you need to remove the extra frames from the edges until you reach the frame with a sowing.

Frames with sowing can not be removed. We lift them by the shoulders and estimate the sowing, we also act with frames on which food, but only if it is in good condition. If you find a sowing and everything is fine with it, it means that there is a good and productive queen in the family. If it is not found, then we inspect this family completely. Sometimes it happens that the uterus is there, but due to the lack of feed, it does not sow sowing.

Then it is enough just to give the family food and soon it will start sowing. Well, in the absence of a uterus, we add this family to another or put another uter there. Next, clean the sub and the hive itself. This procedure is very easy to carry out if you have a removable bottom. Remember, if during the inspection traces of diarrhea are found, it is better to move the bees to a new hive, and not to use the old one. After we add food to families that lack it.

In this case, be sure to remember that in the nest 8-10 kg of feed is considered the norm. In a strong family, this rate is slightly larger - it is about 14 kg of honey and about 2 honeycombs filled with perga.

After this, we pretend the strength of the family and remove or add a few frames to the hive. At the end of the set plates from Varroa, while it is desirable to put new ones every year otherwise the tick will quickly get used. At this stage, the inspection can be considered complete. The insulation is put in place and the hive is closed. Then be sure to write the results of the inspection in the beekeeping magazine.

What to do with the weak

In the spring, when conducting audits, weak families become the most common problem. So that they develop well and gain strength, you need to do something with them. There are two ways out. The first is the union of two weak families in order to create one stronger one. The second is the strengthening of the weak by means of sharing it with the strong. Both options are considered correct.

But we must remember that the second option can be carried out immediately after determining who and to whom to settle. The first is carried out only in the evening. At the end of the strengthening of families, the next day you need to start with the preventive treatment of bees sanapin. It is done in the morning before the departure of insects.

How else can bees help and when should another audit be conducted?

Some beekeepers during the spring revision are forced to take more radical measures, such as moving the family to a new hive. The reasons for this may be many. The simplest is the complete unsuitability of the old hive. Then, after the audit, theft of bees may become the biggest problem. The most frequent causes of its manifestation are the presence of non-flowing and weak families, the complete or partial absence of a bribe, the inexperience of the beekeeper, etc.

And now a few words about when the next similar general audit should be carried out at the apiary. In total, there are two such revisions per year: spring and autumn. That is, a repeated overhaul will be conducted in the autumn, when the honey collection is already over, and the summer weather is still warm. The purpose of this inspection is to help prepare the insects for wintering. More details about the theft of bees, their relocation to a new home and the autumn revision will be discussed in our next articles on beekeeping.
