Sooner or later, before any nutritional guide it becomes not very pleasant, but, unfortunately, a necessary question about the slaughter of nutria at home. It is this difficult topic that we will today disassemble.
How to conduct?
Nutria are animals that are valued for their beautiful fur and for meat that has good taste. The slaughter of these animals is not an easy procedure and one cannot do without some knowledge and skills here. So, first we will give a couple of tips: choose the morning time for the slaughter of rodents, and 12-16 hours before the procedure, try to provide the animals with a hungry diet. This will not only help you easier to carry out the slaughter of nutria, but also during the cutting and dressing will be a big plus.
Today, experts call 2 methods of slaughtering nutria: manual and using electric current. We will talk about each of them in more detail.
In the manual mode nutria is fixed vertically by the tail and hind paw. At the same time, hold the animal in your left hand, as the right one needs to hit him on the forehead or nose. The blow must be of such strength as to instantly kill the animal. As a rule, choose a stick for this purpose and wrap it with a rag for a softening effect. It is important not to damage the blow on the head and not crush the skull.
Then the carcass need to bleed. For this, a sharp knife is inserted deep under the lower lip along the lower incisors towards the cervical vertebrae. At the same time, the jugular vein and carotid artery are cut. Blood draining for 2-3 minutes is collected in specially prepared dishes. Next, turning the bloodless carcass and taking it by the head, several times press the hand on the animal's abdomen to remove the contents of the bladder.
The next way of slaughtering animals, using the electric current is much easier and, according to many breeders, more humane. The question is that not all nutritionists can provide such an option at home. Wires with alternating current attached to the legs of the animal and pass through it a current of 220 volts and a force of 0.7 Amps. The slaughter in this way lasts no more than 3-5 seconds. As a rule, this method of killing is used for large and physically strong animals.
Cutting and dressing skins
After the slaughter is over, you need to take care to properly remove the valuable skin of nutria. This should be done immediately after the killing of the animal, as rigor mortis occurs rather quickly. Use only sharp knives for the procedure!
How to remove the skin?
Remove the skin with a tube, starting with the tail and ending with the head. Circular incisions are first made on the hind legs and the tail is cut. Then we make a cut in the inner part of the thighs from the hock joint of one foot to the other (as shown in the diagram below). To preserve the integrity of the skins, it is necessary that the strip of skins from the lumbar section of the animal be transferred to the abdominal part. The anal opening is cut out in a circle, the male genitals are removed.
Making cuts with a knife, the skin is separated from the muscles of the whole body and thus reach the front paws. After the skin is removed from the front paws, it is easily separated from the head. Some experts, in order not to stain the valuable fur with blood residues, impose a "collar" from a newspaper or cloth on the neck of the nutria. The skin is pulled very carefully, so that it does not stretch, and the fur does not thin out. Excess fat, muscle and connective tissue are gently brushed with a knife, you can also use scissors and surgical instruments for more accurate work.
What to do next?
For further degreasing of the skins, you can use a special device of a rounded conical shape (blanks), with a diameter of up to 15 cm and a height of up to 1 m. Places of breaks, if any, are sewn up with threads in the color of fur. Then the skin is dried in a well-ventilated room or outside in the shade at a temperature of 25-30 C on special rules. The skin on the rule should be placed freely, with the preservation of the natural size.
It is recommended to periodically remove the skins and shake them in order to avoid fur podpryvaniya. Further refinement is to perform the following procedures:
- Soaking the peeled skins in water for about 12 hours, until they become pliable.
- Degrease in a solution of table salt and laundry detergent (at the rate of 3 g per liter of water).
- Repeated cleansing of the skin from prirezy meat, muscles and fat, thorough rinsing in cold water.
- Pickling in this solution: for 10 liters of water 0.5 kg of salt and 120 ml of acetic acid;
- Tanning. Here you will need the following composition: 10 liters of water, 50 g of salt, 70 g of hyposulphate and 30 g of potassium alum.
- Fat skins. To this end, an emulsion of laundry soap (60 g) and lard (20 g) dissolved in water (200 ml) is applied to their skin. Apply the emulsion cooled to a temperature of +35 C.
- Drying of the skins on special devices in the form of a bell up to 50 cm high, with diameters of the upper and lower rings 12 and 8 cm, respectively.
Further on the thematic video you can see how the process of dressing the nutria skin is carried out visually.
After the final drying, the skins are kneaded manually until the desired level of softness is obtained. You can also in some places to clean the skins with emery paper. After all the complicated procedures listed above, we can assume that your skin is ready for the manufacture of various fur products from it!
