About worms in rabbits

Like other animals, worms in rabbits are common. There are no oddities in this, because they are constantly in contact with the habitat of parasites. And inexperienced farmers can not always create the right conditions for their pets to protect them from pests. And all would be nothing, but the worms, getting into the body, cause him irreparable harm, but to notice them to an ignorant person is not at all easy. Therefore, read the article and learn to notice the danger in a timely manner.

Infection options

When the worm enters the body of pets, it undermines their internal microflora, disrupts the organs and causes great damage. The problem is that the pronounced symptoms of helminthiasis appear only when the damage has already been done, and the breeders have not only to remove the parasites, but also to eliminate the consequences.

It will be better if you take care to prevent infection. To do this, you need to figure out how the worms penetrate the rabbit body. One of the options for infection is contact with animals that are on the street. Cats, dogs and rodents - a clear source of helminthiasis. Therefore, if you care about your fluffies, protect them from contact with the outside world.

But, even if you keep representatives of the hare family in isolation, the risk of infection remains. Worms can enter the body with food. When you collect grass for rabbits from the fields, you do not think about how much infection it contains. Giving it to animals, you infect them with helminthiasis.

External signs and how not to miss them

When external symptoms appear in rabbits, treatment should begin immediately, as this indicates that the animals are in danger. Each of the signs separately may indicate other diseases, but together they alert you about the danger - do not miss these signals.

The emergence of helminthiasis in the body indicates a strong thirst. Rabbits can not tear themselves away from the drinker, and, as a result, they often go to the toilet. They have diarrhea, less often - constipation. But in the feces you can find greenish mucus. Their hunger can either disappear, or manifest itself with a vengeance.

Rabbits are very restless, as they are constantly tormented by itching in the anus. Their appearance also suffers: the wool grows dull and climbs, and the veil falls to the eyes. If you notice all the above symptoms, you should give the animal anthelmintic drugs. But before you do this, you must confirm the diagnosis.

Confirmation of suspicion

If you find the above symptoms in an animal, then immediately take it to the vet to confirm or deny suspicions. At home, you can accurately detect only one type of worms - pinworms. This results from the fact that they lay eggs in a rectum, and the part of them leaves outside together with excrements.

The detection of worms in rabbits and the treatment depends on your observation. You can confirm your suspicions only in the veterinary laboratory, where the animals will take feces or blood for tests. The first version of the study takes a lot of time, since the feces have to be passed several times: the eggs of the worms do not always go out.

The detection of helminths in the second way is the most successful solution. When analyzing the blood of a rabbit infected with worms, the doctor will easily notice changes in its composition. This is due to the fact that the body itself fights against parasites and produces antibodies for their destruction. This method is good for everyone except the cost.

Real danger: harm to the body

Problems in the treatment of worms in rabbits are due to the fact that the helminths, entering the body, are localized in various parts of it. It so happens that you treated animals for parasites in the intestines, and they hid in the bronchi. Worms can live in the liver, spleen, lungs or heart - destroying them every day.

Being in the body of rabbits, parasites absorb blood, lymph and all sorts of useful substances coming from food. Therefore, even with a good appetite, animals do not gain mass. Helminths destroy the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, violate the metabolism and the digestive systems.

If time does not stop the parasites, the animals will die. Cause of death can be a blockage of the intestine or rupture of its walls. Rabbits die from exhaustion or intoxication, as their bodies do not cope with the toxins excreted by the worms. Even if the animals do not die, then their immune system will suffer great damage, the restoration of which will have to spend a lot of time and money.

The most common types of parasites

Before studying and, especially, using anthelmintic drugs, it is necessary to classify the parasites. This will help to understand which drugs will be useful, and from which it will not be confused. In nature, there are several thousand helminths. Some of them live in all living organisms, others - only in specific animals.

To effectively treat rabbits for worms, let us highlight those parasites that most often affect them. The most convenient way to divide the worms in appearance - this classification allows you to determine their type. The most common helminth infections have a ribbon structure - these are cestodes that live in the gastrointestinal tract and are attached there with hooks.

There are also roundworms - nematodes and flat parasites - trematodes. But the nastiest are cryous worms, or blood suckers. If it is they who start up in the body of rabbits, then the symptoms appear most clearly, but the damage to the body is also caused to a greater degree.

Passalurosis - a hare disease caused by parasites

When worming is necessary to identify the type of parasites that have settled in the body. Then it will be clear what kind of pills to give to rabbits.

Passalurosis is an obstruction of the intestines caused by the accumulation of pinworms - small roundworms. Parasites invade animals with food contaminated with their eggs.

The incubation period lasts up to 2 weeks, after which the worms hatch from the eggs and begin to actively proliferate. If time does not swallow rabbit, the animals may die. This is especially true of newborn babies, whose immunity is not yet strong. As a prophylaxis of passalurosis, animals are given special foods, which include piperazine salts.

Particular attention is paid to the process of mastication during the mating period. For reinsurance, piperazine salts consisting of adipate, phosphate and sulfate, or phenothiazine are used. These drugs are also used to treat passalurosis, but it is better not to bring this up.

Echinococcosis or tape parasites

If the laboratory found the presence of tapeworms in the body of rabbits, then you urgently need an anthelmintic agent that removes these parasites (see below). Belt worms, in fact, medium-sized - only 2.5-8 mm. But there are so many of them that they quickly fill up all the internal organs.

The danger of these parasites is that their eggs leave the body of rabbits and can remain in the invasive stage for up to 1.5 years. During this time, they fly throughout the farm and get to other pets. Therefore, if at least one animal has a tapeworm on the farm, antihelmintic drugs are given to all cattle.

When the eggs enter the body of the rabbit, their shell dissolves. Worms penetrate the capillaries, which move to the liver - this is their main place of accumulation.

The problem is that the liver is involved in cleaning the blood, and through it the worms can get into all the internal organs: lungs, heart, brain. Next, we will tell you what means to deal with worms.

Medicines and instructions for their use

The deworming of rabbits should be carried out only proven medical drugs. For example, Pyrantel, Tetramisole or Dronten should be used strictly according to the instructions and only if there are no better medicines. This is due to the fact that their overdose causes the body even more harm than the worms.

Very popular medicine "Shustrik", known for its speed. Means is given once, counting on each kilogram of weight of 1 ml of a preparation. If the suspension is not poured into rabbits, it is mixed with food: 1 ml per 50 g of feed.

If the situation is critical, as is the case with tapeworm infection, rabbits should be given a combo from Albendazole and Gamavit. The first tool instantly kills parasites, and the second - restores immunity. Drug regimen looks like this:

  • 1-8 day: "Gamavit" on 1 ml .;
  • 3-5 day: "Albendazole" 2 times a day, 0.75 ml.

It is not recommended to start right away with Albendazole, since the release of worms is a stress for the body, and treatment with weakened immunity can be fatal.

Mindless use of drugs

We want to warn you that the mindless use of anthelmintic can harm the rabbits even more. Novice rabbit breeders for reinsurance, give animals potent drugs, not realizing that they cause serious harm to the body of animals.

Remember that any antiglytic drug is a potent poison that can not only kill the parasite, but also destroys the intestinal microflora.

You will not get much benefit from excessive worming, but the damage will be serious. First, anti-worms drugs are not a cheap remedy if you buy them in large quantities. Secondly, the introduction of drugs to pregnant rabbits or during the feeding period may damage the offspring.

The same thing happens when you exceed the dosage. The proportions calculated by the manufacturer are enough to help the animal. Increasing them, you will not get the desired result, but only harm the rabbits. Therefore, if you have crept suspicions of worms, worm the animals with any folk remedy described below.

Worms secrets kept by the people

If you are worried about the health of rabbits, then the best way to prevent worms is to feed them with suitable herbs and drink clean water. In the people for worm eared, use wormwood, tansy or pine needles. But harvest the grass should be in the spring before flowering. The needles, on the contrary, are collected only when the frost is below -20 degrees.

Of course, the course of Albendazole that is drunk effectively removes worms, but it is not recommended to use it for prevention. But to give a dried wormwood - a good solution. In addition to therapeutic properties, grass increases appetite in rabbits, which decreases when infected with helminths. In the treatment of 30% of the feed is replaced by wormwood.

When the course of any medication is lost to rabbits, one should always remember that they can harm the body. If possible, you should not use them. So, when detecting worms, you can give tansy to rabbits, replacing it with 30-40% of the diet.

Recommendations for the reduction of patients

If you did not swallow rabbits in time and showed helminths in them, then infected individuals are recommended to be separated from the rest of the livestock. When treating such animals, it is important to strictly observe all sanitary and hygienic rules in order not to transfer the worms to healthy animals or humans.

It is believed that rabbit worms are not dangerous for humans. Moreover, it is allowed to consume infected meat after heat treatment. But we advise you to be careful.

When removing worms from rabbits, always collect excrement, destroy them, and treat the cell with chlorine-containing solution. Do not forget to remove damp hay, as it is a favorable environment for worms. It is almost impossible to wash the larvae from the litter, so it is recommended to burn it.

Prevention is carried out in March and August. To do this, animals are given any anthelmintic drugs or herbs, which we discussed above. Antiglister spend 1-2 times per year, according to the following scheme:

  • 1-3 day: enter drugs or herbs in the diet;
  • 4-13 day: break;
  • 14-16 days; taking drugs or herbs.

Do not neglect this procedure, because prevention is better than treating rabbits for worms. Get acquainted with other pests in the article "Treatment of the ear mite in a rabbit."
