There are many ways to make a pig feeder with your own hands. Bunker-type devices are designed for dry food, which is considered the most effective in pig production. These devices are designed very convenient and easy to manufacture. Dimensions are selected depending on the age and population of animals. In the article we will examine in detail all the advantages and disadvantages of "feed bunkers", and also give instructions for their self-assembly.
Advantages of the bunker
The design of the bunker type is arranged according to the following scheme: it is a box tapering to the bottom, which goes into the feed tray. The feed is poured from above and falls into the trough through a narrow horizontal slot.
When the tray empties, the next batch enters from the hopper. The main advantages of such a feeder:
- uniform feed;
- the animal cannot contaminate or scatter food;
- the food is laid down for several feedings at once.
Feed bin suitable only for dry food. Otherwise, they are subject to the same requirements as other types of equipment for feeding pigs. Feeders should be:
- made of non-toxic material;
- safe for animals;
- easy to clean;
- size is selected based on the number of heads per item;
- are set up to guarantee the pig a free approach to food.
When making your own pig feeders, keep in mind the number and age of your animals.
For yourself or on an industrial scale
Bunker feeders more useful to apply to farms, numbering from 5 heads or more. Although to simplify with their help, feeding a pair of piglets taken for fattening until autumn is also not bad. An adult pig should have at least a 50 cm tray. If you plan to feed young piglets, 30 cm is enough. Also the height of the tank is regulated (from 15 to 60 cm)
If you make a feeder for piglets with your own hands, then the height of the tray (trough) must be selected depending on the age of the animals. Approximately boards should reach pigs to a breast. In this case, they will not need to bend down, and feeding will not harm the bones and joints.
Metal feeders are stronger and more durable than wooden ones, but they require high initial costs and manufacturer's qualifications. Metal bunkers are best used for feeding adult animals, and from wood - for young animals.
What and what to do
If you decide to make a metal or wooden trough on your own, you need to pick up the material, calculate its quantity, stock up on tools and fasteners.
In order for the bunker trough to serve for a long time and correctly, it is important to think through all the stages of manufacturing in advance, for example, how to properly connect parts.
For the manufacture you need: a few sheets of stainless steel (2-3 mm thick), a Bulgarian, a welding machine and electrodes for it, corners, a mallet.
If you have no experience with metal and electrical equipment, it may be easier for you to use wood as a material. To make a wooden trough, you will need:
- several boards (with a thickness of 40 mm and more, and a width of 60 cm or more);
- a couple of bars (40x40 mm, length depends on the size of the product);
- screws, or nails;
- screwdriver or hammer;
- several metal corners.
Regardless of the material chosen, first study the drawings of the future product, which we will discuss below.
Measure off and cut off
Bilateral bunker feeders for pigs are good to use for large livestock (from 20 heads above). If the herd is small, in a couple of days you can make a small one-sided construction for 3-5 gilts. So that the sows do not push, divide the feed tray into sections.
Before you do the pig feeder with your own hands, evaluate your skills in working with metal and wood. Calculate the number of boards or metal and fasteners. Check if the tools are working.
The drawing of the bunker trough should include visualization of the connection of the sides of the box and the fixing of the remaining parts. Be sure to indicate the approximate dimensions:
- bunker (wall height - 150-270 mm, width 90 mm at the top, 60 mm - at the bottom, length - 200-290 mm);
- restrictive bar with a diameter of 20x20 mm;
- trough height (20-60 mm);
- sidewalls (two triangles - 100x180x205 mm).
If the feeder is double sided - lay the necessary dimensions and on the second side.
With welding machine and grinder
Feeding trough from metal for adult sows and boars is done in several stages. First, the metal sheets cut and form parts. Finished walls are welded into a quadrangular box.
Inside it is welded bunker. One or two sheets (depending on the type of feeder), angled so that there is a feed slot at the bottom. In the same place the restrictive level is established. Compound feed will begin to accumulate in the lower part of the bunker.
As the tray becomes empty, the feed in it will be updated by gravity. The bunker ends with a single or double sided tray. Equip the pallet with stoppers. For this fit reinforcing rods. Finally sand and paint the product.
Such a structure is easy to wash and disinfect, and a large feed tab (from 40 kg) allows you to optimize the feeding process.
Saw and hammer
For the manufacture of cheaper wood feeders for piglets or adults, you can use both boards and plywood or chipboard.
The main disadvantage of this trough is a short lifetime. This is due to the fact that the tree does not tolerate moisture, and the bunker and the tray for pigs will have to be washed. Boards begin to rot, and it is impossible to saturate them with special compounds, because they are poisonous to animals.
From the boards bunker feeder for pigs do with their own hands in several stages. First, mark and cut out the details of the structure - two triangular end, rear and front walls, sides and bottom of the tray. Dimensions similar to those specified for the feeder made of metal. Sand the resulting parts.
Connect the elements of design with metal corners, putting them on the screws or nails. If necessary, additionally install a restrictive bar at the bottom of the bin. If the feeder is installed in the courtyard, provide the bunker with a lid on the piano (furniture hinges) so that no precipitations fall into the box.
To enhance stability, nail two bars to the bottom of the tray along the long side of the structure. Use crossbars from a timber to divide the trough into sections.
You can install and fall asleep feed. With other variants of similar products, see the article "Types of feeders for pigs."
