On the farm, pig feeding equipment is of paramount importance. A good trough will not only saturate the animal, but will not give the food to go to waste. It will be used sparingly and stay clean longer. Devices for feeding liquid food (drinkers) also perform their useful functions. You can find out what types of feeding troughs exist, how they should be made and how you can make them yourself, in our article.

Needs trough

The model of pig feeders depends on the sex and age of the animals, as well as on the number of livestock. They are made from different materials: steel, plastic and even pipes.

When choosing it is important to remember about the economical consumption of feed. And, of course, the trays made should be comfortable and safe for the animal.

The easiest option is an open container, such as a bucket or trough. But poured food will quickly become dirty, and even give it in portions will not work.

For animals of different ages need feeders of different sizes. And their design depends on what kind of food (dry or liquid) will be applied there.

The feeder must meet the following criteria:

  • provide free access to feed;
  • be set in proportion to the age and number of animals;
  • be easy to clean and clean;
  • must not allow foreign objects to enter the feed;
  • should not roll over;
  • be sealed for liquid feed (should not leak).

Big Pig Big Trough

For piglets, the feeders can be small and narrow; it is convenient for adult animals to eat from large bunker tanks or long troughs equipped with separators.

Below are the norms of the length and width of the feeding equipment by age.

In the same way, the dimensions are calculated in the manufacture of feeders for liquid feed (drinkers).

Main types of feeders

All existing types of equipment for feeding can be divided into two groups. They differ in the method of use and their device.

According to the method of use emit:

  • stationary (pigs cannot move them through a stable);
  • mobile (needed in large farms, provide uniform nutrition of the whole herd);
  • individual (for example, in boxes for sows or small pigs);
  • group (for feeding several animals at the same time).

By device:

  • conventional (open type), for example, a basin or trough (they are cheaper to manufacture, but require more feed and effort for cleaning);
  • bunker or their variety - automatic (they are more expensive to make, but they are more effective for fattening pigs).

In many ways, it depends on what type and size of the feeder you choose, how much effort, time and money you spend on keeping animals.

Automatically into the bunker

Bunker pig feeders - the most convenient and economical for dry food. They are arranged as follows. Feed is poured into the box. Through the gap in the lower end of the box, he gets into the pan, where it is eaten by pigs. As the tray empties, the next batch enters from the bin slot. With such a device, animals do not put garbage in the feed. Food is not wasted, which saves on cleaning and the amount of food. The bunker is designed for multiple feedings, which reduces maintenance costs.

Automatic pig feeders - an upgraded version of bunker devices. They are arranged according to the same principle, but equipped with special restraints. The dosed portion of feed enters the pan after the timer set for a certain time has run. They are especially effective in keeping pregnant sows or feeding piglets.

Making pig feeders requires electrical engineering skills.

When you want to drink

For water in the barn set drinking bowls. They must completely provide the pigs with water, must not rust (they use galvanized materials for manufacturing) and let the liquid through. In the cold season, they are warmed or installed in a heated room.

Main types of drinking bowls:

  • vacuum;
  • pan;
  • nipple (teat).

Vacuum - the most simple. Take a jar, fill it with water, cover with a bowl and turn over. A small amount of water will fall into the bowl. As you drink it will be updated. Due to the small volume of this drinker is better suited for piglets. Make sure they do not overturn it.

Cup models are tanks with sides. Water is continuously supplied to them, but it enters the bowl after the animal presses the pedal. Water in such a drinker is always available, but not sprayed and economically consumed.

Nipple constructions are similar, but the animal presses on the nipple to get drunk. If you decide to make such a drinker, remember that water is supplied to the piglets at a pressure of 2 atm., And to adult pigs and boars - 4 atm.

Do it yourself

The market offers troughs for every taste and wallet, but you can do it yourself if you have the necessary skills and tools.

The composition of the bunker trough includes: a feed hopper, restrictive slats regulating the feeding of the mixture, a feeding tray, side walls and dividers that do not allow the mixture to fall out.

Details of the production we tell in the article "How to make your own bunker feeder for pigs."

In the backyard pig farm, the trough can be made of any durable stainless metal, for example, galvanized. Sheet thickness must be at least 0.5 mm to ensure a solid and durable construction.

Bend the sheet with a mallet and cut the edges. Weld end sides and legs. From above, weld across a trough several rods every half meter so that the pigs do not climb into the food.

Cut the barrel and balloon

Excellent trough obtained from the old plastic barrel. Make sure that no harmful chemicals have been stored in it before.

Divide it by sector (2-4, depending on volume). Cut the barrel apart. Screw the legs onto it (for example, wooden blocks). Strip the resulting product.

Approximately the same make the feeder out of a gas cylinder. With proper care, she can serve up to 20 years. To make such a feeder, make sure that the tank is empty.

Then apply soap suds on the neck - no bubbles should appear. Put the bottle and cut the valve (during sawing, constantly wet the place of the cut). Wash the container thoroughly and drain the waste water away from the shelter.

Now cut the balloon along and burn the resulting troughs with a gas burner to remove the smell of gas. In conclusion, weld a restrictive grid (bar) or twigs from above.

In the manufacture of feeders from an empty gas cylinder, follow the instructions for manufacturing and safety.

One pipe - two troughs

Durable, non-corrosive feeders are obtained from a ceramic or asbestos-cement pipe. They are heavy and require a special foundation. For this, you will need additional tools and materials (sand, cement).

To make a "pipe" feeder, take a piece of pipe of the required length, cut it along.

Prepare the base for the resulting half-pipe. To do this, make the formwork and fill the form with cement-sand mixture.

Handle the pipe ends, install wooden or metal plugs (side barriers). Provide for the possibility of draining them when washing the feeder.

Make the trough tight, missed seams cement mortar.

To prevent pigs from feeding, install a restrictive grid. For her fit fittings with rods with a diameter of 15 mm. Weld them every 45-50 cm feeders.
