Considering how much the pig eats up to the moment of slaughter, you can correctly determine the possible costs that will pay off after the implementation of the carcass. Today, there are several types of fattening animals for high-quality meat and fat with a minimum level of costs. But in industrial animal husbandry, preference is given to feeding with mixed feed, which allows a pig to reach slaughter weight up to 100 kg by 6 months.
Calculate the cost and cost of meat
Balanced from an early age diet allows for a short time to raise a large pig with a low cost of meat. Owners of small private farmsteads that grow animals for personal consumption prefer to feed pigs with a variety of feed, including vegetables, grain, and waste from their table. This allows you to give the meat and lard excellent taste, but it makes sense only when fattening 1-3 pigs.
In the industrial pig industry, this approach is impractical because it does not allow to accurately calculate the feed consumption and the cost of meat sold in the wholesale and retail network.
On medium and large pig farms, animals are fed with special feeds, rich in vitamins and other substances, easily digested by the pig. The combined feed is sterile and safe, and the stable content of nutrients in it allows you to correctly calculate the daily diet for a pig of any age.

Practicality of dry feed
Using feed is very practical. It eliminates the livestock breeder from various problems associated with the calculation of the daily rate of feed for one pig. Piglets quickly gain weight, almost do not get sick, and the quality of their meat meets the standards of industrial pig breeding.
Manufacturers of combined feeds necessarily disinfect their product, as well as saturate it with vitamin and mineral supplements that are perfectly absorbed by the body of the fattening pig.
Combined feeds are compact and for storage in pig farms do not require large premises. If you control how much a pig eats, you can achieve its rapid growth and achieve a slaughter weight by 6-7 months.
A prerequisite for feeding with feed is to provide pigs with free access to clean water, which requires up to 6 liters per piglet per day.
Correct daily rate calculation
There are several types of mixtures used to feed young for the pre-slaughter age of 4-8 months, as well as for feeding adult boars and sows left to perform reproductive functions.
Immediately calculate how much feed the pig needs to perform certain functions for it, and only then proceed to the acquisition of piglets. The daily rate of consumption of the combined feed depends on the age of the pig, its physiological characteristics and the purpose of the content.
Experts identify feed used for meat-fed, breeding of pedigree herd, feeding pregnant sows, as well as fattening pigs before slaughter. Each of them has a balanced composition of vitamins and chemical elements, corresponding to the physiological needs of animals, as well as fully meeting the needs of their body in proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
If you do not control the amount of feed, then pigs with a wonderful appetite can eat much more than the norm. At the same time, the rate of increase in muscle mass will not increase, and the general condition of the animal will gradually deteriorate.
Feed unit as a basis for calculating the daily diet
To simplify the calculation of the amount of feed required for raising farm animals, the concept of feed unit is used in Russia. It corresponds to the caloric content of 1 kg of seed oats, which is 1414 kcal.
The calorie content of 1 kg of agricultural products corresponds to the following number of feed units:
- soybean and corn - 1.34;
- planting peas - 1.14;
- sunflower meal - 1.07;
- wheat grain - 1.06;
- Wheat bran - 0.72:
- potatoes - 0.31;
- sugar beet - 0,24;
- wheat straw - 0,22;
- alfalfa and meadow grass - 0,19-0,22;
- carrots - 0.14;
- pumpkin - 0.12;
- zucchini - 0.07
Depending on the composition of the feed mixture, its caloric content can be from 0.8 to 1.22 feed units. The breeder should be very careful to monitor this indicator, correctly calculating the rate of feed consumption by their pets.
Feed conversion (interchangeability) allows you to use different crops for feeding pigs, which will receive exactly the calculated number of calories and will be able to maintain a given rate of increase in muscle mass.
Recommended feeding rates for pigs
By monitoring the weight gain of animals, you can accurately calculate how much they need to feed for optimal weight gain, without wasting expensive products that, instead of the expected benefits, can cause serious harm. In pig breeding, a table has been developed for the consumption of feed by pigs raised for meat, in terms of feed units:
Thanks to this table, pig breeders who know the caloric content of the feed used can accurately calculate how much food should be given to the piglets for a rapid increase in muscle mass and maintaining their physical condition in good condition.
Special focus on feeding suckling piglets
Already two-week-old piglets are required to give 200 g of dry food per day, gradually increasing the rate to 0.5 kg by the age of one month. This will allow every healthy pig for 30 days to gain weight of 6-7 kg, to show mobility and activity in the diet.
Together with the growth of animals that reach a weight of 10-11 kg by the age of two months, the amount of feed eaten by piglets per day increases to one and a half kg per day. At this time, it is recommended to feed them with milk milk, a substitute of whole milk, as well as low-calorie, but juicy vegetables. Therefore, the total amount of feed can reach 2-3 kg per day, eating which animals will consistently gain in weight.
After 2.5 months, the weight of the fattening piglets reaches 14 kg, the livestock breeder, up to slaughter, transfers them to full feeding with dry feed, and can use the above table to calculate the diet.
When purchasing feeds, do not forget to check the quality certificate, which must necessarily indicate the caloric content of the dry mix, which allows you to correctly calculate the daily ration of the fattening pig.
High profitability of feeding with mixed feed
When growing pigs with the use of dry combined feed, in 6 months they will turn into strong pigs with a weight before slaughter of 100-110 kg. During this time, the amount of feed eaten will be about 500 kg, while with a normal diet they would need at least 1200 kg of potatoes and other vegetables.
If pigs at this age are sent for slaughter, then it gives good profits to a livestock breeder professionally engaged in breeding pigs for meat.
Feeding adult animals kept for the production of offspring has its own characteristics, which are expressed in a more high-calorie diet.
It is considered normal if a single sow eats up to 2.5 kg of feed per day, with free access to a source of clean drinking water.
A pregnant pig should eat at least 3.5 kg of dry feed mixture per day, and the daily allowance of the sowing sow is not less than 6 kg of feed.
Fattening pigs and boars
Boar-producer, having the same size with a pig, you need much more feed to perform the functions assigned to it.
A boar, having the same size as a pig, will always be harder due to the peculiarities of its body constitution. Therefore, when its content is required to increase the rate of feed up to 3 kg per day, and in the reproductive period, add to the diet a whole milk replacer (milk replacer) and raw eggs that boars eat with great pleasure. Usually, 100-200 g of milk replacer and 5-10 eggs per day are sufficient.
The same amount of feed should be given to the pigs, which are planned to be fed to obtain fat. By the end of their life, they can reach a weight of 200-230 kilograms, after which the culling is carried out. Some individuals are written off, while others are left for divorce.
Annual calculation of feed consumption for pigs of different ages
Experts estimate that, subject to the technology of cultivation, it will take from 35-40 kg of feed to keep one pig up to two months. And from birth to 4 months a pig eats about 120 kg of feed.
Ten-month fattening piglets, having reached a weight of 100 kg, will eat 910-1060 kg of various feeds for one pig for the entire period.
It takes about 1.5 tons of feed to feed an adult single pig per year, and with system farrowing, feed consumption rises to 1,800 kg.
Depending on the age and physical condition, the boar-producer will need to feed 1.4-1.65 tons of feed per year. The breeder should take into account all these nuances, leaving only the most productive pigs to be kept, and the rest to be sent for write-off and slaughter.
Consumption of feed for growing pigs for meat
If you decide to feed pigs for meat using feed from various manufacturers, it is best to buy them in bulk at the most reasonable price. In this case, it is better to use the table of approximate calculation, prepared with regard to the daily rate of feeding of one pig.
At once we will specify that the table is approximate. Its data may vary depending on the caloric content of the feed you use, as well as on the physical condition of the animals, which may lose their appetite during the illness.
