Communicating among themselves or even being completely alone, pigs grunt. Many scientists pay great attention to the study of methods of communication in animals. In accordance with one of the studies, it was established that the “language” of representatives of the pork family is second in its informativeness, it is second only to the “language” of monkeys. And, in addition to the well-known "oink-ooze", the pigs make other sounds, which will be discussed below.
Wild boars communicate in the same way as domestic pigs.
The most common and familiar to all sounds are:
- sound "roh-roh".
Experts distinguish more than twenty from the sounds made by pigs. Each has its own meaning. Some are characteristic of the period of courtship and the flirting of individuals in front of the opposite sex. Others mean a desire to eat or indicate discomfort, fear. An adult animal and a pig communicate in different ways. The baby has a thinner voice, and the manner of squealing is different. He takes much higher notes and is not capable of solid grunt until he reaches the right age.
A wild boar makes almost the same sounds as a domestic pig. He also squeals and grunts. However, he is more silent and, as a rule, endures physical pain in silence.
But during the attack on the enemy the boar is able to literally roar. The male does this during the period of courtship for the female, which during the heat can hum, attracting attention to itself. Domestic pigs in the period of hunting and preparation for mating behave exactly the same.
Screams like a plane at the start
In anticipation of a hearty meal or some kind of delicacy, the mumps shortly and deafly utter "roh-roh". With the same sound, they can greet the host or demonstrate the pleasure of walking.
In the case of discontent, anxiety, animals combine grunting and squealing in one signal.
One of the interesting facts is that when a pig squeals, the power of sound can be 115 decibels, which is only 15 decibels less than the aircraft makes at the start.
The pigs grunt from pleasure and squeal from pain.
Interesting results were obtained by ubiquitous British scientists after studying the sounds of 72 pigs who lived in different settings. It was found that if pigs were to be given comfortable living conditions, they would grun more often than their relatives living in harsh conditions. Initiative individuals also make sounds more often than passive animals.
In general, at present, scientists agree that pigs are much smarter than they are usually evaluated. These animals live in complex social communities, where they follow each other, learn and collaborate, so they have their own ways of communicating and transmitting information.
By the way, the sound "Oink-Oink" itself is a pure invention of the Russian language. No matter how funny the word may seem to us, but pigs in Japan speak Japanese and it sounds like “boo-boo”. It seems to the French that their little pigs utter “groyn” with pleasure, and the Poles can hear the “crunch”. These are the language of conflict.
