A novice cattleman does not always understand why a pig does not eat, but lies. This situation can not be ignored, because the appetite of cattle is one of the main indicators of its health. There are several reasons for this problem: from inappropriate animal conditions and poor diet, to serious infectious diseases. We will understand what to do if the pig does not get up and refuses to eat.

Reasons for not eating

A completely healthy pig has a good appetite. If the animal has become less active, constantly lies and does not touch the food, you need to look for a problem. Cattle can completely ignore food or eat quite a bit. Such a reaction most often indicates any pathology in the body of the pig. The reason may be the following factors:

  • avitaminosis;
  • worms;
  • infections;
  • all sorts of diseases;
  • improper care;
  • stress.

Avitaminosis in pigs most often causes a lack of vitamin D, which appears due to an unbalanced diet, lack of essential trace elements. Worms enter the body through water, unprocessed meat and soil. They cause bacterial and viral infections that cause intoxication. Also, the reason for refusal of food are stressful situations, poor-quality care and maintenance, loud noise from working appliances. Below we dwell on each of the reasons.

If a nursing pig refuses to eat, health problems may occur to her offspring.

Vesicular exanthema

Piggy refuses food because of exanthema - an infectious pathology. The cause is calicivirus. The incubation period of the disease lasts from 12 hours to 2 weeks. During exanthema, the animal is reeling, and its body is covered with many rashes. Also, neoplasms appear on the mucous membranes in the mouth and patch. Inside the rash is serous fluid.

The pig feels very weak, therefore constantly lies. After some time, the temperature of the diseased livestock decreases, and the affected areas become covered with a yellow crust. In the absence of proper treatment, the second stage of the disease begins, during which the rash covers the toes and hoofs. The animal still does not eat, begins to limp. A sow has a dead piglet. Uncomplicated form of the disease lasts about 1-1.5 weeks, while chronic - 2-3 weeks.

Mortal Plague

If the pig does not eat because of the plague, you need to take urgent measures. This is a very contagious disease that affects the blood vessels.

Also, in severe cases of plague, the gastrointestinal tract becomes inflamed, and pulmonary pneumonia begins. The illness proceeds in a feverish form. It is caused by Togavirus, which is composed of ribonucleic acid. It accumulates in the lymph, bone marrow, affects the blood vessels and liver. The result is very deplorable: the walls of the vessels become thinner, hemorrhages begin, the tissues die off.

The incubation period of the plague extends a maximum of a week. After that, the boar temperature rises sharply by 2 degrees, hemorrhages appear near the ears, thighs and abdomen. Animals are sick and vomiting, they become lethargic, refuse to eat. They have diarrhea, and the stool contains blood clots.

To date, there are no drugs against the plague, so the animal dies 2-3 days after the onset of the disease. Young cattle disease proceeds in a more severe form. After confirming the disease, the animal is immediately slaughtered to prevent the spread of pathology.

Enzootic pneumonia

Also, pigs do not eat because of pneumonia, during which the respiratory organs are affected. The disease is caused by a virus and most often affects young livestock that have not reached the age of one month. The situation is complicated by the resistance of the microbe to antibiotics, so he has been in the animal for a long time.

The incubation period lasts about 1.5-2 weeks, and the first symptoms appear after 3 weeks. The temperature of the animal rises to 41 degrees and above, begins a dry cough and sneezing. If the disease is not treated, it can last for several months. Animals do not immediately refuse to feed. At first, they continue to eat normally, but during feeding they have a coughing fit. Then breathing quickens, pigs feel oppressed and stop eating, so they lose weight and height. With timely competent treatment with antibiotics, the disease continues for 1-2 months.

Dangerous flu in pigs

Cattle may ignore feed due to flu. This infection, which is characteristic of acute. It occurs due to influenza virus that causes inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. Infection can be diagnosed using a blood test, urine or cough discharge. The flu incubation period is short. The first symptoms begin as early as 2 days after infection.

In animals, the temperature rises sharply by 2 degrees above normal. They are almost all the time, do not react to extraneous noise and refuse to eat. Respiratory organs suffer, resulting in coughing, sneezing. If there is no treatment, conjunctivitis begins. During flu, a pig rubs its head against walls and doors, and its tail, limbs, and ears take on a bluish tinge.

Symptoms of the disease disappear after a few days, but then appear with a new force. In addition to the above symptoms, arthritis, pneumonia and maxillary sinuses begin. In severe pathology, meningitis may begin. In this case, there is a high mortality rate of piglets. On average, 50% of the total number of diseased livestock die.

Gastroenteritis viral

This is another disease due to which pigs refuse to eat. It is characterized by an acute course. The disease causes RNA that contains a coronavirus. Because of him, a large number of young are killed. The virus does not tolerate ultraviolet rays, light and heat, and therefore dies under their influence. At the same time, in conditions of severe frost, the virus is active for at least 2.5 years. The virus accumulates in the intestine, after which it enters the bloodstream and spreads through the internal organs.

The latent form of the disease in newborn piglets lasts up to 12-18 hours, in young animals - a maximum of 4 days, and in adult pigs - a week. Symptoms also depend on the age of the animal. In young animals, they are as follows;

  • severe diarrhea,
  • unstable temperature;
  • constant thirst.

Most of the sick piglets die within 3 days after the onset of the disease. A wild boar has a slightly increased temperature, reduced appetite and diarrhea does not stop. Adult cattle are more resistant to gastroenteritis. Usually a maximum of 20% of the herd dies. The disease is contagious, so sick cattle must be immediately isolated. In more detail in the article "On the transmissible gastroenteritis of pigs."

Constipation and bloating

Pigs do not want to eat if they have constipation. It can occur by itself, or be one of the manifestations of another serious disease. In the latter case, pigs feel weak, lie constantly, breathe heavily, their temperature rises. A problem arises if the diet is formulated incorrectly, feeding too much feed or expired foods.

If the disease is due to an abnormal diet, laxative medications are used. It is necessary to eliminate the nutritional deficiencies, provide the animal with the necessary amount of clean drinking water. When the cause is serious illness, you should immediately contact your veterinarian.

Bloating occurs with large amounts of gases, increased gas generation and problems with their waste. The reason is the use of stale food, feeding a large amount of feed. Pigs are restless, lose their appetite. They begin a strong salivation, and the volume of the abdomen visually increases.

Vitamin D deficiency and poor diet

Appetite is sometimes absent due to beriberi, which causes problems with calcium-phosphorus metabolism. This leads to rickets. At the beginning of the disease, cattle have perverted addictions. They refuse to feed, but they begin to gnaw litter, manure, feeding trough, lick the walls of the barn. The gait becomes mincing and lame. Animals fall while walking, screaming in pain. Also among the symptoms - bloating, sluggish behavior.

All those who are interested in pig breeding should be able to organize cattle feeding. If you give a piglet a very large, hot or cold food, it will begin to have problems with the intestines. You also need to be careful with the change of diet. In order not to disrupt the work of digestion, you need to gradually introduce new feed. Otherwise, diarrhea, constipation, and poisoning can occur. In this case, pigs refuse to eat, constantly lie and behave not actively.

Worms and temperature conditions

Sometimes piglets lose their appetite due to worms in the body. The problem appears as soon as the infection begins. The animal becomes lethargic, constantly rubbing its tail on hard surfaces to scratch it. If pathogens invade the bronchi, the piglet coughs.

If untreated, the temperature rises, and due to poor appetite, the brute loses weight. Worms can be seen in the feces of the pig. Especially long roundworm worms. To get rid of the problem it is necessary to carry out deworming. As soon as the worms disappear, the appetite of the animal will be the same. The article "Ascariasis in pigs" contains all the additional information.

Piggy need quality conditions. The stable should not be too cold, warm or humid. If it is stuffy in the room, piglets often lose their appetite, so they gain weight poorly. It is necessary to exclude drafts and regularly clean. Sick animals should be immediately isolated from healthy ones.
