Normal body temperature in pigs is one of those aspects that require serious attention. As a business, pig breeding can bring good income to its owner, but only if it is properly treated. It is not enough just to provide pigs with quality housing conditions or to give them the necessary feed in the right amount. Of great importance will also be the issue of monitoring the state of their health, including temperature as a marker of diseases.

Depends on breed and gender

Let's see what the temperature in pigs is considered normal. Keep in mind that this is influenced by many factors - the age and sex of animals, their physiological state and even breed.

In an average individual, indicators of 38–39 degrees are considered the norm. It should always be approximately within these limits. At the same time, females performance is constantly slightly higher than that of males initially.

Especially during the pregnancy of the pig and the subsequent feeding of the newborn. The same applies to calves, - in piglets temperature indicators are always higher than in adults.

  • palpitations.

In no case can one expect that the temperature will return to normal on its own, ignoring the problem most often leads to the death of the animal. However, it is not necessary to bump into a panic, in itself the fact of the growth of the thermometer is still not identical to the disease, other symptoms mentioned above will speak about its appearance.

Factors contributing to fever

In about 50% of cases, the deterioration of animal health and the occurrence of fever in them is associated with poor feed quality. Symptoms and treatment of sick animals depend a lot on what the thermometer's indicators are. Therefore, they need to properly use. The ideal measurement option is to recognize the use of a special electric thermometer that does not require entry into direct contact by an individual. The cost of such a device, of course, is quite high, but for a large farm with a few dozen heads, such spending will not be overwhelming, and it will pay off pretty quickly.

There is another way to measure temperature in pigs, based on the rectal application of a mercury thermometer. If you use this cheaper version of a glass device, you will have to spend some time waiting for the result, a more expensive electronic thermometer will give it almost immediately.

It must be remembered that indicators of 41 degrees and above serve as a signal for increased attention to this individual, but there is no reason to panic.

Ways to obtain reliable data

The benefits of such a “measurement” are very doubtful, the error is very high and one should not rely on the information received. The heat-insulating properties of fat are such that this method does not allow to display the true picture, moreover, if the temperature in the room itself is low, the results will be as unreliable as possible.

Finally, we should not make the mistake of some farm owners who perform rectal measurements on different animals without disinfecting the thermometer. Such negligence can lead to infection of healthy individuals, and in some cases, humans too.
