Pig body temperature

Normal body temperature in pigs is one of those aspects that require serious attention. As a business, pig breeding can bring good income to its owner, but only if it is properly treated. It is not enough just to provide pigs with quality housing conditions or to give them the necessary feed in the right amount. Of great importance will also be the issue of monitoring the state of their health, including temperature as a marker of diseases.

Depends on breed and gender

Let's see what the temperature in pigs is considered normal. Keep in mind that this is influenced by many factors - the age and sex of animals, their physiological state and even breed.

In an average individual, indicators of 38–39 degrees are considered the norm. It should always be approximately within these limits. At the same time, females performance is constantly slightly higher than that of males initially.

Especially during the pregnancy of the pig and the subsequent feeding of the newborn. The same applies to calves, - in piglets temperature indicators are always higher than in adults.

Also, the pig's body temperature of the ornamental breed is about 1 degree higher than that of the meat one. This is due to the fact that in meat pigs the body is covered with bristles, and not with fur, like with decorative ones.

For sows, a higher measurement result is common, since their physiological parameters are influenced by higher pressure, heart palpitations and the release of hormones into the bloodstream. For adults, weight and age factors do not have a significant effect on temperature. The only moment that can play a role here is associated with a layer of fat under the skin - the more there is, the lower the temperature on the skin.

Health indicator

Veterinarians are considered fever as a fever, but this should not be automatically perceived as a disease. For example, take the figure in the region of 38-40 degrees, - in a piglet, such a temperature is considered normal. Another thing is that a deviation from the norm can mean the development of diseases in the animal's body, the increase in indications on the thermometer in combination with a number of other signs is a signal for concern.

Among the signs that indicate that not everything is normal in the body of a pig, and that she has health problems, include the following:

  • loss of appetite for no apparent reason;
  • weak reaction to external stimuli or its complete absence;
  • significant decrease in motor activity;
  • apathy to everything happening around;
  • dry skin;
  • the bristles begin to puff up, the color becomes duller;
  • eye redness;
  • palpitations.

In no case can one expect that the temperature will return to normal on its own, ignoring the problem most often leads to the death of the animal. However, it is not necessary to bump into a panic, in itself the fact of the growth of the thermometer is still not identical to the disease, other symptoms mentioned above will speak about its appearance.

Factors contributing to fever

In about 50% of cases, the deterioration of animal health and the occurrence of fever in them is associated with poor feed quality. For example, the normal temperature in pigs is incompatible with food spoiled by rodents or weather conditions. In addition, piglets are extremely sensitive to the lack of protein in food. The use of roughage can provoke inflammatory processes of the mucous membrane. As a result, pigs have digestive disorders and fever.

Temperature changes may occur in sows during the feeding period, which is most often associated with mastitis. Minor increases can signal banal avitaminosis.

Described above applies to diseases not related to infections, but a rise in temperature may be caused by other diseases. You can get acquainted with one of them in the article "On the classical swine fever".

In particular, animals can also be affected by gastroenteritis, tracheitis or bronchitis. What to do in the last two cases will tell the article "Why pigs cough."

Measurement Technique

We told you what a normal temperature is in pigs. But with human standards this issue should not be approached, here the measurement rules are completely different.

Symptoms and treatment of sick animals depend a lot on what the thermometer's indicators are. Therefore, they need to properly use. The ideal measurement option is to recognize the use of a special electric thermometer that does not require entry into direct contact by an individual. The cost of such a device, of course, is quite high, but for a large farm with a few dozen heads, such spending will not be overwhelming, and it will pay off pretty quickly.

There is another way to measure temperature in pigs, based on the rectal application of a mercury thermometer. If you use this cheaper version of a glass device, you will have to spend some time waiting for the result, a more expensive electronic thermometer will give it almost immediately.

It must be remembered that indicators of 41 degrees and above serve as a signal for increased attention to this individual, but there is no reason to panic.

It is necessary to watch the animals carefully during the day, continuing to take measurements, paying particular attention to the appearance of other symptoms. Even if they do not find themselves, but the temperature did not drop, you should contact your veterinarian for help and advice.

Ways to obtain reliable data

It is not always possible to immediately measure the body temperature in a pig, especially with a mercury thermometer. For example, when using it, it is necessary to insert the device into the animal's anus for no less than 10 minutes, otherwise the data obtained cannot be considered reliable.

Keeping a piglet, or even an adult, at rest is not so easy for such quite a long time. Therefore, some breeders, having failed here, are trying to solve the problem in another way. Thus, the technique of gluing with a patch to a pig of a mercury thermometer is often used.

The benefits of such a “measurement” are very doubtful, the error is very high and one should not rely on the information received. The heat-insulating properties of fat are such that this method does not allow to display the true picture, moreover, if the temperature in the room itself is low, the results will be as unreliable as possible.

Finally, we should not make the mistake of some farm owners who perform rectal measurements on different animals without disinfecting the thermometer. Such negligence can lead to infection of healthy individuals, and in some cases, humans too. Therefore, this procedure should be carried out with caution and with the fulfillment of basic hygienic requirements.
