Causes of blood in milk and treatment of a cow

When a blood is observed in the milk of a cow, the causes and treatment of the pathology can be very different. Actions aimed at helping the animal depend on each individual case. After all, the drink can be stained with an open wound of the udder, mastitis or vascular cracks. It happens that the mammary gland is bleeding due to contusion, furunculosis and possible congestive edema. In this article, we will examine the most common situations and tell you what to do and why to help the cow.

The most common cause

One of the most common causes of blood in the milk of a cow is inflammation of the udder, which passes in an acute form. Pathology is called mastitis, and this neglected form is hemorrhagic. As a rule, the disease occurs after calving the cows in the very first days, if the standards of sanitation and animal care have not been complied with.

Microbes that have entered the udder rapidly develop in a weakened body after calving, affecting half or all of the udder. It is with this form of mastitis milk stained with blood, scaring the owners. This type is a complication of two other common types - catarrhal and serous inflammation of the mammary gland.

More information about these forms of the disease can be found in our articles "On serous mastitis in cows" and "Catarrhal mastitis in cows".

If you find blood in a cow in milk, do not think for a long time what to do in this case with a calf. Immediately take it away from the mother and translate into artificial food or feeding from another cow.

The fact is that milk from a patient suffering from mastitis cannot be consumed, especially since, in addition to blood, it may contain purulent flakes and be watery.

Treatment regimen

Milk with blood in the udder of a cow with the described pathology is formed as a result of multiple hemorrhages in the breast tissue. The sick female with mastitis should be immediately transferred to a separate room and create conditions for her recovery - warm, dry bedding, lack of drafts, reduce succulent feed.

Here is an approximate treatment regimen:

  • inject 10 ml of caffeine subcutaneously (20%), if cardiac activity has visibly weakened;
  • intravenous glucose (40%) - at a dose of 200 ml;
  • 10% calcium chloride - 200 ml - are also injected intravenously;
  • 800,000 units of penicillin are injected intramuscularly in 4-5 hours over three days.

One of the main components of mastitis treatment is frequent milking with the hands, ideally - every two hours. And then an antibiotic solution is introduced through the nipples. This could be, for example, a mixture of penicillin with streptomycin 50,000 units each. To relieve the pain of the animal, add 150 ml of novocaine (0.25%) to the solution.

Specifically, a soda solution is used to dilute blood clots. Why in the amount of 100 ml it is added to a glass of boiled water. After the introduction of fluid in the udder, it must be carefully milked 20-30 minutes later.

How to help with udder injury

Cattle (cattle), regularly grazing in meadows during the warm season, are constantly at risk of bruises and cuts. For a cow udder, any high-growing thorn or sharp nail sticking in the fence could be the cause of injury.

It happens that serious bruises fall on the mammary gland when cows butt each other with horns. It is necessary to be afraid even of a calf, which having bucked too can hit a cow with a hoof.

As a result of all the above and similar situations in the breast, hemorrhage occurs. It is usually visible, as the skin on the udder turns red, it becomes dense, the cow behaves restlessly, showing that it hurts. During regular milking, blood may appear in the milk.

These injuries are treated by applying ice for half an hour, and on the second day with warm vodka compresses.

The wounds are deep and not very

If the wound on the skin of the udder is open, then the blood flowing from it can get into the milk. Help depends on the complexity of the damage to the skin. If the incision is deep, you may need the help of a veterinarian, he will put stitches.

In the case when the wound is small, you can do it yourself by disinfecting using any available method (iodine, brilliant green) and taping the damage with a paper patch to limit the penetration of dirt into the breast tissue.

Speaking about the ingestion of blood in cow's milk, we note the possibility of its getting there from a blood vessel, which burst. At the same time the product gets dark pink color. As a rule, in such a situation the owner of the Burenka does not need to do anything. Everything will pass by itself in two or three days.

However, during such a period it would not hurt to feed the cow with vitamin C and calcium.

Cracks and warts

In case of inattentive care of the cow udder, cracks may form on the nipples, which are also able to release blood into the milk. In such cases, during milking, the Burenka behaves restlessly, trying to avoid the touch of the milkmaid’s hands.

Usually this happens in a state of neglect, when the skin on the nipples is already very dry, and the cracks have become deep. In order to prevent a decrease in the elasticity of the udder, it is necessary to wash it regularly and treat it with special means, for example, with the “Dawn” floral cream. Often used for the purpose of prevention and conventional petrolatum. We also recommend that you prepare the ointment yourself.

Heat 200 g of vegetable oil and add 3 tablespoons of melted paraffin. You need to prepare the mixture in a water bath until everything is completely dissolved and becomes a homogeneous mass.

Keep in mind that the resulting cracks afterwards due to the ingress of dirt into them become the site of the occurrence of warts, which grow. You can remove them only with the help of surgery.
