It happens that at the age of 7-8 months, the calf has lost gum, and you do not know how to treat a youngster. In order not to harm the growing organism by improper actions, it is necessary at least theoretically to study the digestive system of cattle. Then understand why the chewing process can stop. And, finally, how to help the unfortunate child in each case, because the reasons for the lack of reflex can be different.

The newborn calf is not a ruminant

Let's first analyze what happens in the stomach of a newborn calf. As with the adult cow, the digestive organ of the baby consists of four sections: the scar, mesh, book, and rennet. But they do not work immediately. Initially, when colostrum or milk is used as food, only abomasum is used, where food enters immediately from the esophagus. The resulting milky lump is digested and partly passes into the intestine. Thus, there is a full absorption of nutrients entering the body.

It turns out that the newborn calf is not yet a ruminant animal, respectively, the gum symptom is completely absent. And in the stomach works only one camera. And only when the animal gradually begins to use roughage, does the work of all other parts of the stomach start.

Remember: a newborn calf is not chewing gum. It starts a few weeks after the baby was born, and the full process of the work of the digestive organs is set to 7-8 months.

The movement of feed in the stomach

As soon as the stomach of a young ruminant begins to work in full force, the same processes take place there as in the guts of an adult cattle. The swallowed feed passes into the scar, then into the mesh, which passes small pieces into the book, and then into the abomasum. The resulting gases push (burp) large meals back into the mouth, and the calf chews them again until they become small.

The process of chewing each portion lasts no more than one minute. After that, the calf swallows chopped food moistened with saliva (by the way, it produces about 100 liters of saliva per day), and belches the next big bite. The easily digestible feeds are in the rumen in just one and a half to two hours. Rough ones can travel in the stomach for several days, they burp and chew more than once.

As soon as this complicated process is disturbed, it is necessary to sound the alarm and find out why the gum has disappeared from the calf. After all, this symptom can be a harbinger of a serious disease.

If atony happened

Depending on the reason why the calf does not have chewing gum, the treatment prescribed will also be different. Among the pathologies that cause its absence, we call atony, which stops the reduction of the scar. The reasons may be:

  • a sharp transfer of the calf to another food, for example, from juicy to coarse;
  • eating too much husk from any cereal;
  • use for feeding young stock of poor quality grain;
  • excess of chaff in the diet;
  • other diseases that caused atony, as a side effect.

If this pathology is immediately recognized, then it can be cured easily in 5-6 days. The ill person is put on a starvation diet, that is, for the first two days they give nothing but water. Twice a day, an infusion of hellebore 10 ml per dose is administered by mouth. Do intravenous injections of sodium chloride (5%). You may need from 300 to 500 ml of solution. To stop the process of fermentation in the stomach, use the drug "Macarobacillin." Dosage - no more than 10 g per day.

How to remove bloating scar

The gum in calves disappears during the illness of tympania. This pathology occurs when a large amount of gas accumulates in the rumen and a foam is formed. As a result, swelling occurs. Causes of illness: hypothermia, a sharp rejection of dairy food, poor sanitation, spoiled food in the diet, overfeeding a calf with succulent fodder, lying grass. Strengthening the fermentation processes in the digestive organs contributes to the formation of gases that the baby is unable to regurgitate.

Outwardly, this is manifested by a visible increase in the left side of the animal. The danger lurks in the pressure of the bloated scar on the lungs, as a result, the calf can suffocate. In this case, like an adult cow, the baby is given ichthyol diluted in 5-7 liters of water (2 ml). Carbolen (5g per dose), 1% resorcinol solution (10 ml per day) and tympanol, which are diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 10, help to remove bloating.

Acidosis can be added to these diseases when the pH of the chewed food in the rumen is disturbed. It also causes cessation of gum. All these pathologies are very dangerous and can lead to the death of the calf. Therefore, as soon as possible, you need to contact the veterinarian so that he adjusted the treatment being carried out.

Remembering grandmothers means

And what to do if you did not have the necessary medicines at hand? We use folk remedies, for example, the same tincture of hellebore. In 0.5 liters of water diluted with 10 ml of infusion and water the baby. After half an hour, give the same amount of the prepared solution and then repeat the procedure 3-4 times every 20-25 minutes. This remedy irritates the walls of the stomach, helps to improve motility, eventually a belching appears, and the chewing process returns.

Chamomile and wormwood also help to reduce bloating. For a single dose, 2 ml of infusion of these plants is enough. It is necessary to give with breaks in an hour and a half. You can brew the fruits of juniper, and drink calf half a liter every hour.

Do not forget that during the period of stopping the digestion, the animal is not given any food, at the same time water consumption is left in unlimited quantities.

Pasture must be clean

If the calf does not chew the cud, it stands with its back arched, and its body temperature has increased by more than 39 degrees, then it is possible that it has swallowed some foreign body. The fact is that in the grass can be nails, wire, glass, the remains of iron cans, which cut the mower. The mouth of cattle inside is covered with nipples that are directed inside the alimentary canal, this is what prevents the animal from pushing the dangerous object out.

Once in the stomach, usually these things get stuck in the mesh and inflammation begins. Pulling them out occurs surgically. Metal objects can be removed with a magnet. An experienced specialist is required for these procedures; it is impossible to free a baby from a foreign body on its own.

We talked about helping calves lose gum. If you are interested in the treatment of adult cattle, then it is discussed in the article "What to do if the cow does not have gum."

Vodka with garlic

Take advice from experienced farmers. It is believed that if the calf has a hungry fossa, then the tympanum is there - let's say tympanol, as described above.

Check the work of the stomach in the following way: press down the hungry hole with his fist and count off 120 seconds. If the fist is pushed out - everything is in order. And if not, give the calf two Drotaverine tablets (no-shpy), pushing them into the larynx. Then take 0.5 liters of vegetable oil and pour it directly into the mouth from the bottle. Following the same method, pour 200 g of vodka with two crushed garlic cloves. You can make a light massage of the abdomen.

Under the influence of alcohol, the calf will sleep for about four hours. After such a procedure, the work of the stomach is usually restored, but a mandatory diet is recommended - a shred of hay, steamed oat-flakes and nothing more for two days. No greens can be given.
