Among beef cattle of the meat direction one of the first places belongs to Kazakh white-headed cows. This famous breed has been confirming its reputation for more than a decade. Based on the existing conditions, livestock breeders often choose it for their high productivity and maintenance features, allowing them to keep cattle in the open air most of the year. As a rule, these cows are used for meat production, but there is a variety of Kazakh meat and dairy whiteheads.

A bit of breeding history

The origin of the Kazakh white-headed breed originates in the Kazakhstan steppes. In the early years of Soviet power, breeders were faced with the task of improving local cattle. Therefore, the Kalmyk and Kazakh cows adapted to the harsh steppe conditions interbred with the English Herefords.

To improve the meat indicators of the horned cattle, the animals created special conditions. Almost all the time, except for winter, they were under the open sky. In the cold season, only rough foods were combined with concentrates and silage. Calves were kept on nursing.

As a result, strong and durable animals with high meat productivity were bred. The new breed was so successful combination of genetic material that in many ways surpassed their ancestors.

Distinctive external signs

From progenitors, Kazakh white-headed cows got strong short legs that easily carry a large muscular barrel-shaped body. The speaking name of the breed indicates the invariably white color of the head, dewlap and lower part of the belly. The legs and tassel of the tail of this breed are also white.

Growth in the withers of Kazakh white-headed people is 120-130 cm, body length 150-155 cm. Elastic skin easily allows you to gain and lose weight several times a year. Well-developed subcutaneous tissue with a large amount of adipose tissue helps to adapt to low and high air temperatures. Internal fat is about 12% of the total weight of the carcass. By winter, Kazakh white-headed overgrown with thick and long hair - this is another feature of the steppe breed of cattle.

The main advantage - cost

The preservation of the steppe genotype with an emphasis on the amazing cost-effectiveness of maintenance was the main characteristic of the Kazakh white-headed breed of cows.

If the livestock breeder has spacious pastures at his disposal, the herd can be fattened at no cost to feed.

Bred on scanty, hard, fast-burning steppe grasses, these animals perfectly assimilate any pasture, quickly gaining weight.

By 8 months, the weight of the calf on a nursing feeding will be 210-250 kilograms. Maternal milk in combination with coarse food allows animals to gain 450-480 kg of live weight by the age of one and a half. Daily weight gain bulls reaches from one to one and a half pounds.

Adult cows weigh from 550 to 580 kg, breeding record bulls gain up to 950, oxen up to 1100 kg.

Animal conditions

For breeding this breed of cattle using the content without a leash. Freedom allows you to move a lot and ultimately gives high performance to Kazakh white-headed cows. And all this combined with low food costs. In the summer, use special walking grounds and pastures. In the winter - spacious and bright stalls. For calves, a free access to the common pen is organized, where feeders and drinking water are located. Places for young chicks equip around the perimeter.

In the first months, calves are taught to less valuable feeds and concentrated mixtures. Top dressing for them is laid in the feeders, from where only youngsters can eat. It is useful to add 3-5 g of calcium and phosphorus per calf to the daily feeding.

At the end of the fattening period, bullheads get good concentrates. The ratio of green mass and concentrates in a ratio of 7: 3 gives the most economical combination.

Dairy and meat indicators

In terms of weight and meat quality, the Kazakh white-headed is one of the best breeds. Minor layers of fat make tasty and juicy meat "marble". Slaughter weight ranges from 53 to 55% of the total weight of the carcass. Due to fat, this indicator in bulls can be increased to 64%. Bone mass in the slaughter yield takes only 14%.

In addition to the meat breed, in the breeding process in Kazakhstan, the meat and dairy variety was bred. In the process of selection, these animals were given succulent feed, the cows after calving were distributed, taking away their calves.

The peculiarity of Kazakh white-headed milk is a high percentage of fat content (up to 4.8% depending on the period and feed), usefulness and good taste. Dairy indicators of meat breed are small - 1000-1500 liters per lactation. Cows of the combined type yield about 2500 l of milk per year (they can produce up to 6,000 l). With a low cost of livestock maintenance, this combination is very cost-effective.

A strong maternal instinct can be a disadvantage.

The hereditary qualities of Kazakh whiteheads are manifested not only in endurance and unpretentiousness to feed and temperature conditions. Like most wild cattle, these cows are very caring towards their offspring.

Calves are born large - from 27 to 30 kg. It is better for a person not to interfere with the calving process: the physiological characteristics of the Kazakh breed allow the cow to endure the birth process with little or no complications, but the appearance of a calf can make the cow aggressive.

As follows from the description of the breed, the Kazakh white-headed is a successful combination of a whole bunch of important advantages. These include:

  • early maturity;
  • tasty valuable meat;
  • fat milk;
  • high-quality skin (double-fold - 1.15 cm);
  • undemanding to feed;
  • unpretentious care;
  • good adaptation to high temperature differences (from -40 to +50 degrees).

One more important detail is the stable immunity of Kazakh white-headed. These animals have practically no predisposition to any diseases.

High profitability (almost 95%) makes the Kazakh white-headed breed of cows a good choice for livestock breeders. Its breeding is especially beneficial in cases where the farmer himself is engaged in the preparation of feed. On the tribe of whiteheads are bred in many Russian farms, but especially valued cattle grown in the Urals and in the Tselinograd region.
