It is impossible to say unequivocally what and how to treat mastitis in a cow after calving. During the period of pregnancy, cattle all the forces of the body gives birth to offspring, while she herself becomes weaker and more susceptible to disease. That is why after the birth of a calf, so often completely healthy-looking individuals suffer from inflammation of the mammary glands. Veterinary care should be provided to them, taking into account the effects of the experienced stress and general weakness of the organism.
Transfer to food with dry hay
Even at the stage of preparing a cow for childbirth, a caring owner should think about the reasons that can cause mastitis. In the last two months, the animal gives all the useful reserves of the body to the calf. It is very much in need of human help. This help consists, above all, in the organization of proper nutrition. It is necessary to increase the amount of hay and concentrated feed. Succulent herbs, vegetables and root vegetables are almost eliminated to stop the milk production process.
This way of eating is an excellent preventive measure for the occurrence of mastitis after calving. In addition, the separation of the cow after childbirth will be greatly facilitated. If these restrictions in food is not done, mastitis in childbirth is provided.
When the described diet does not help, and the milk continues to be produced, then the menu should be removed and concentrates. In this case, the cow remains only on feeding with dry hay.
Running with anti-mast remedies
The next stage is called the launch, when, after a diet, the milk is not produced and the cow is no longer milked. And finally, there comes a dry period, which lasts a half to two months. At this time, the animal is fed intensively, but it no longer provides milk.
In large farms, special medicinal products are used for start-up, the main purpose of which is to combat mastitis. As a rule, these are antibiotics that are inserted into the nipple two months before delivery, for example:
- suspension "Mastisan";
- complex drug "Gamaret";
- means for the termination of milk "Orbenin";
- syringe tube "Orbesil" (after the introduction of the suspension in the nipple tube is formed, which blocks the penetration of infection).
Running a cow with these products is more effective, as these drugs prevent possible mastitis.
Boss comes to the rescue
A cow that has settled should be given maximum attention. After all, childbirth, although a natural process, but requires very large forces and energy costs from the animal. At the same time, the cow becomes very susceptible to various infections. At this moment her body is an open gate for them. And here again a loving master must come to the rescue.
It is necessary to provide the cow with rest and light food — well-dried grass and oatmeal mash. A large amount of juicy feed after calving leads to inflammation of the udder. At 4-5 days, you can gradually begin to increase the vitamin-containing feed.
Allowing newborn calves to suck on the mother's udder for the first two days will be useful, especially for heifers. But then they should be fed from the nipples, and the cow should continue to distribute with the hands so that the milk does not stagnate in any of the lobes. In order to avoid mastitis, it is also necessary to do a preventive massage.
Straw used for bedding in a cow stall should always be kept clean. Therefore, it must be changed every day, removing manure from the room with it. If the birth was without complications, the animal can be driven to the pasture on the third day. But make sure that this is not a field with high sharp and cutting grass. If the udder gets scratches and cuts, infections easily penetrate through them, which can lead to mastitis.
Udder is a very vulnerable organ, it can become inflamed and from drafts. Therefore, to keep a cow after calving should be in a protected room, but at the same time, well ventilated.
Supercooling of the organism of the animal is also dangerous. If childbirth occurred in the winter season, then provide the cattle with warmth and protection from the wind.
When the recommended requirements are met, the treatment of mastitis will not come.
When prevention did not help
However, if, after calving, the udder still inflamed and mastitis began, then urgent measures should be taken.
One of the most common forms of the disease can be catarrhal when one of the lobes becomes inflamed. Usually it is characterized by the appearance of seals in the nipple area, a reduction in the amount of milk and the appearance of lumps and flakes in it. By the time - this is the first week after the start of lactation.
For treatment, first the udder sore lobe is freed from milk, it cannot be eaten. Then about 100-150 ml of soda solution and salt are launched into the nipple. To do this, take 100 ml of distilled water and dilute it with soda and salt in a 1: 2 ratio. After 15-20 minutes, they are sown again.
If a cow shows signs of anxiety due to pain, then blockade with novocaine (4%). Dosage - 75-80 ml of solution. Antibiotics are also added - streptomycin, neomycin, or others from the penicillin group. The injection is done in the thigh muscle, 4 thousand units per kg of animal weight.
Fighting antibiotic germs
Often after calving, a serous form of mastitis can occur. Almost always, only one udder portion suffers. Treatment begins with frequent milking - every three hours. In the initial stage of the disease, cold is applied to the udder to relieve fever. With an already developed disease, warming compresses and massage with camphor or ichthyol ointment are shown. In addition - a procedure using a quartz lamp.
Also use antibiotics, which are injected into the nipples using special syringes-dispensers or use a catheter. An experienced veterinarian will be able to identify the cause of infection, and if it is caused, for example, by staphylococci, it will prescribe "Maxims". The drug has an antimicrobial effect.
A common remedy is Bencel, which very effectively fights gram-positive bacteria. Treatment with the antimicrobial drug "Doreen" takes only two days. Initial dose - 10 ml, repeated - 5 ml.
Antibiotic therapy is started only if the cow has a high body temperature. Milk can be eaten or fed to calves no earlier than five days after the last injection.
You can find recipes for homemade ointments and compresses in the material "Treatment of mastitis in cows with folk remedies." And among the drugs in the pharmacy you can buy ichthyol ointment for udder massage. Light massage is an integral part of the comprehensive treatment of mastitis of any form. We also recommend Vitemol ointment, which prevents the penetration of harmful microflora into the nipple channels.
A concomitant medication can also be a streptocide solution, which is injected intravenously or injected directly into the udder. And with complicated forms of inflammation of the udder, glucose solution injections are added to antibiotics (40%).
