Mastitis in cows: treatment at home

It is possible to start the treatment of mastitis in cows at home only if the owner already has initial veterinary experience. It is necessary to possess some skills of carrying out procedures to carry out them independently. And also to know exactly where, how and what dose of drugs can be administered to the animal in the form of injections. The use of compresses and udder massage for inflammation of the mammary glands is not just lotions or chaotic stroking. For everything you need practical skill and theoretical knowledge.

Make sure the presence of the disease

Keep in mind that diagnosing and especially prescribing medications on your own is dangerous. Suddenly you can make a mistake, and the symptoms of the disease will simply turn out to be similar to mastitis? Then you will cause irreparable harm to the health of the animal and miss the time to start treatment. Therefore, if possible, do not delay with the call of the veterinarian, and only after his appointments proceed to their implementation.

But if it is not possible to consult a doctor, then the owner of the cow can still make the diagnosis himself, using special milk-control plates "MKP-1" or "MKP-2". We wrote about this in detail in the article "Mastitis in cows: symptoms and treatment." We only recall that when taking milk for analysis, it is necessary to mix the first streams in order not to get a false result.

In addition, even without being a veterinarian, you will be able to independently examine the udder of a cow. Feel every beat. If the skin is inactive, almost not going into small folds, and inside there is a seal, - these manifestations give you a reason to use the mentioned test.

For each form - its own syringe

In the treatment of mastitis in cows in the home apply washing of the udder with various decoctions. Nettle gives a good effect in the initial stages of the disease if it is brewed at the rate of 3 tablespoons of leaves per liter of water. Saline is also suitable - a tablespoon (without top) per liter. Remember that the solutions should be warm - about 30 degrees.

Udder washing can be a preliminary procedure for more serious interventions for severe forms of mastitis. The basis of treatment is antibiotics. However, they are recommended to be used only when the cow does not release milk, that is, during the dry period.

Fully freeing the mammary glands from the milk by hand, “Masti Weiksim” is administered to each nipple (and not only to the patient) with a catheter or dispenser for at least three days (dose - 10 ml for three to five days). Modern medical industry for ease of use provided for the manufacture of special syringes intended for injection into the nipple:

  • "Difumast" is used in serous and subclinical mastitis;
  • "Bayoklav IMM LC" is used for catarrhal and purulent forms;
  • Laktobay helps with complications and the chronic course of the disease;
  • "Dienomast" is indispensable to assist with acute forms of mastitis;
  • "Mastinon Forte" is used in the clinical course of the disease.

Recommendations for the introduction of medication in the nipple

Treatment at home mastitis in a cow allows independent introduction of antibiotic into the mammary glands of the animal. We will show some subtleties.

After complete release of the nipple from the secretion contained in it, the nipple should be wiped with ethyl alcohol (70%). The injected medication should be heated to 35 degrees and shaken. The cannula (needle) of the syringe should be pressed tightly against the entrance to the nipple canal. Then do a light massage of the udder for better distribution of fluid, the movements go from the bottom up.

The dosage is prescribed by a doctor or you can act according to the instructions. For example, in the presence of purulent-catarrhal form of mastitis, 10 ml is injected for the first time, and another 5 ml a day later, repeating this dose for 5 days.

In order not to disrupt the process of therapy, in no case should not interrupt treatment. This can be done only with the appearance of some allergic reactions. Then you need to use antihistamines, and the medicine that caused the unnatural symptoms is replaced.

Clay and paraffin

Red and white clay is used in the treatment of mastitis, making them applications on the udder. To do this in equal quantities mixed red and white species in equal shares. Then prepare a decoction of an equal number of yarrow, nettle and plantain. They dilute the clay to the consistency of gruel. Usually at night they smear all udders completely, and in the morning they wash them off with warm water. Such coatings help reduce pain and reduce inflammation due to the antibacterial effect.

You can use vinegar instead of decoction of herbs (3 spoons per liter of water). In this case, mixed clay is diluted already with this solution.

The use of clay applications usually takes three days. Then you can go to the compresses with paraffin, which is heated in a water bath. Paraffin process only the patient area of the udder, cover with cellophane and incubate for 2-3 hours.

With great success at home for the treatment of mastitis in cows use folk remedies. You can learn more about the topic in the article "Treatment of mastitis in cows with folk remedies."

Ichthyol, camphor and other aseptics

If the doctor has confirmed mastitis in a cow, home treatment involves the use of medical creams and ointments. They help to cure mastitis of any form, improve blood circulation. Massage is done from the top down, thus it is possible to remove pus or stagnant masses through the nipple canal.

The most common ointment used to treat breast inflammation in cows has been camphor for many years. It has not only a warming effect, but also irritating, causes a rush of blood to the sore spot, relieves inflammation. For therapeutic effect, it is rubbed for 2-3 minutes and a protective bandage is applied. The course takes 10 days. However, if the skin is damaged, then apply the ointment should not be. Also, it is not used during lactation.

Ichthyol ointment has an antiseptic effect. And for the prevention of mastitis in cows, veterinary creams are recommended, for example, PIC - softening. It prevents the formation of cracks, softening and moisturizing the skin. KVA antiseptic cream is used in the treatment of serous and catarrhal forms of the disease. It is more effective than ichthyol ointment, which leads to recovery 5-6 days earlier.

Intramuscular injections

Sometimes it happens that all the described means for the complete recovery of the cow is not enough. In these cases, intramuscular and intravenous injections come to the rescue. However, only an experienced doctor can make an injection into the vein, but the drug can be injected intramuscularly without much preparation.

This is usually done if the infection has already engulfed the entire body. For treatment use drugs "Nitoks" or "Bitsillin-5". To do this, the cow is limited in space with a usual pen, so that it does not twitch once again during the procedure.

The best part in an animal's body for drug administration is the muscles of the neck or thigh. First you have to hit the cow several times in this place with your fist, and then sharply insert the needle. When the animal calms down, attach the syringe (in case you only insert the needle) and gently press on the plunger, releasing the medicine. After removing the needle, wipe the injection site with alcohol and lightly spread the injection over the muscle, making massage movements with your fingers.

Dosages 5 cu. units enough for one day. A total of five injections are given to the cow within five days.
