The advantages that distinguish the Jersey breed of cows are easy maintenance and excellent milk yield. Despite the severity of the Russian climate, the breeding of these animals in our country allows us to get good milk yields from them. With a balanced diet and proper care, one adult can get up to 32 liters of milk per day. For this breed, farmers came up with the appropriate nickname - a compact dairy plant.

History reference

The Jersey cow breed is named after the island of Jersey, located in the English Channel between France and the UK. This species is still not widespread in the Russian open spaces due to the high cost. Farmers of the Moscow, Leningrad and Novgorod regions are engaged in raising such cows in our country.

Jersey cow is a typical representative of the dairy direction. It was bred by continuous breeding of several breeds of cattle. By 1789, other types of livestock were not delivered to the island of Jersey, since the bred new breed at that time gave the best indicators of dairy products. Fat milk produced an excellent butter, which, apart from personal consumption, was put up for sale and brought good income to farmers.

In 1866, the breed was entered into a stud book, where they described the external data of animals and recorded indicators of average yield. A few years later, Jersey cattle had already gained popularity in the African and North American continents.

Description of the appearance of animals

When you first look at the oversized appearance of the Jersey breed, you can note their well-built body - long and slightly angular.

The external characteristic of this breed is as follows:

  • short stature, reaching 120 cm at the withers;
  • female weight 400-450 kg, male - 600-750 kg, newborn calves - 19-22 kg;
  • deep (up to 63 cm), but rather narrow chest (up to 38 cm);
  • small head with prominent brow ridges;
  • slender neck with multiple folds;
  • an extended torso with oblique ribs and a concave back;
  • the back is not proportional, the tail is slightly raised at the base;
  • large bowl-shaped udder in cows.

Appearance of both sexes The cattle of the jersey breed is quite pleasant due to a not bright ginger shade or dark brown coat color. The lower part of the body and legs of animals are lighter than the body. The area near the nose and ears is distinguished by less juicy shades. Bulls usually have a darker color, and on the back they have a characteristic black stripe.

Feeding adults

Bulls and jersey cows must receive a balanced diet. Proteins are needed in their diet. This is especially important for cows, since animal reproduction depends on high-grade protein food. The adult menu should include turnips, potato and beet tops, as well as beet and potato roots. Concentrated feeds are usually given at the rate of 300 g per 1 l of milk.

Each animal should consume 12-16 kg of hay per day. To supply the body of cattle with microelements, it is necessary to lay out lumpy salt in the stall room. In food, be sure to add vitamins, if possible, pamper pets with corn and fruit.

Full care for breed cows

It is impossible to note any features in the content of the Jersey breed. Like other types of cattle, they need to provide well-ventilated rooms without drafts, as well as to monitor the freshness of their bedding.

An important point in the description of the nature of these animals is that for centuries they have lived in quiet and peaceful places of the African and North American continents. Therefore, for Jersey cows, the best place to live is a farm that is far from noisy industries and busy city streets. In such circumstances, jersey feel protected, and their nervous system can only envy.

Breed productivity

Jersey breed of cows gives its owner quality milk with a delicate flavor, pleasant smell and low acidity. It contains a lot of useful substances: enzymes break down lactose, protease breaks down proteins, lipase is involved in the effective absorption of fats.

Fresh milk of Jersey cows contains lactoferrin, which boosts immunity and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects.

The annual yield from one cow can reach 4300 kg. 1000 kg of milk is an average of 100 kg of its own weight. When fully fed, its fat content can produce indicators from 5 to 7%, which allows to get very tasty cheese and butter.

Meat and leather products obtained from these representatives are satisfactory. Therefore, Jersey cows are bred mainly for the purpose of obtaining useful and high-quality dairy products.

Reproductive and caring cow

The cows are distinguished by high precocity. As a rule, in the second year of life they can already reproduce offspring. Calving a cow is easy and usually does not require human intervention in this process.

To ensure that the milk quality does not deteriorate after the calving, you should adhere to the following daily milking scheme: the number of milkings in the first week - 6 times a day, starting from the second week (within 10 days) - 4 times, and finally, gradually habitual rhythm - up to 2 times per day.

A jersey cow that was cast off during one month is drunk with warm boiled water. Give the liquid in small portions twice a day, while feeding mainly on feed.

Care for newborn calves

As a rule, Jersey calves are born fragile and small, their weight does not exceed 22 kg. After the birth of a baby, a cow should lick his tongue. If the abandoned burenka is greatly weakened after childbirth, then the owner must self-wipe the calf with hay. The first month of life the baby should be in a warm and calm room.

  • low maintenance costs in private and large farms;
  • excellent health and high immunity of cattle.
  • Only the high cost of Jersey cattle and their timid, sometimes restless nature can be considered negative.
