In ancient Greece, the eyes of a cow were one of the standards of beauty. Their structure has much in common with human ones, although there are differences in color perception and in response to light. Cattle do not need keen eyesight - artiodactyls do not perceive clear outlines and barely distinguish colors. At the same time they see better at night than during the day. And just like in humans, a cow's eye is a very vulnerable and tender organ, prone to various diseases.

What can cause the disease

Owning animals is hard not to notice when those have eye problems. "Crying" pets attract attention immediately.

Red and "sick" eyes in an animal indicate health problems. It can be either directly eye diseases, or other pathologies, which in cows are manifested by tearing and fear of light (for example, foot and mouth disease or metritis).

Why the cow shed tears, determine the veterinarian - the causes of eye diseases in cattle can be very different. They result in internal disorders or infectious diseases.

Some breeders noticed how the eyes of the cows were watery with a lack of potassium in the feed. They explain this violation of water metabolism in the body.

Often, animals have mechanical damage to the eyes. Small particles, getting into the eye of a cow or calf, damage the thin eye film and lead to inflammatory processes.

Serious eye diseases cause anxiety to the animal, impaired vision, can cause the formation of a cataract.

Keratitis - corneal inflammation

The cow eye, like the human eye, is protected from the outside by a transparent film - the cornea. If it is inflamed, then the eyes begin to water, grow cloudy. The cow begins to react painfully to the light.

Corneal inflammation (keratitis) is superficial, and then it is easy to cure an animal. When keratite is deeply neglected, a cow may lose sight. An animal suffering from keratitis needs rest and the help of a veterinarian.

A thorough examination will establish and then eliminate the cause of the inflammation. If the disease has passed into the purulent stage, cleaning may be necessary. Often, the veterinarian conducts as non-specific therapy analgesic measures in the form of novocainic blockade. For normalization of metabolism, calves are given multivitamin complexes, for example, Trivitamin and Retinol.

Conjunctivitis - eyelid inflammation

The surface of the eyelids is lined with a thin transparent fabric - conjunctiva. Ticks and flies often cause the conjunctiva and cornea to become infected with Rickettsia conjunctivae bovis microorganisms. This acute infectious eye disease occurs 3-10 days after infection. It begins with an increase in temperature, photophobia, eyelid swelling.

At first one eye inflames, then the disease affects and the second. Over time, it can turn into a purulent form. In the third century, sores are formed. In infectious kerato-conjunctivitis, cows are isolated from light. For the treatment of the affected mucous membranes of the eyes are used:

  • furatsilin 1: 5000;
  • eye drops;
  • novocaine-chlortetracycline ointment (Novocain - 5.0; chlortetracycline - 5.0; petrolatum - 90.0);
  • antibiotics with corticosteroids in ointments;
  • infraorbital novocainic blockade.

Parasites can also cause disease.

Nematodes of Thelasia rhodesi (telazii) usually infect cattle in the summer. Telazioz becomes the main cause of tearing in cows during this period. Intermediate masters of calves are flies.

Infection leads to conjunctivitis and keratitis. The cow’s eyes become red and watery. In addition to tearing, photophobia and corneal clouding, this helminth disease manifests serous-purulent discharge from the eyes, which glue the eyelashes. Without treatment, the inflamed cornea becomes ulcerated and scars appear on it.

Damage to the lens is also possible. A sick cow can go blind. She eats badly, loses weight, her milk production falls. The treatment of telazioz is carried out in two stages: the medical disposal of the animal from parasites with the help of conventional means of combating worms and the restoration of damaged eye mucous membranes.

Improvised means to restore vision

As a result of inflammation and damage to the cornea, a thorn (leikoma) can form. Cicatricial tissues make the thin cornea opaque - the eyes become turbid, a white spot appears on them. It happens that the calf is born with an eyesore. This means that during intrauterine development, he suffered inflammation.

So that the animals can see again, it is possible 3-4 times a day to blow sugar (powdered sugar) milled into dust under the lower eyelid. It is important that there are no hard lumps in the powder. Experienced owners claim that this can be reduced to an eyesore in a week. However, with deep inflammation and hyperemia, such therapy will not give results soon. The treatment may take a month or more. Medical drugs will lead to recovery more effectively.

Why is the cow crying

The appearance of tears and redness of the eyes is a natural reaction to irritation. With tears, pathogenic microorganisms are washed away. The dilation of the ocular vessels improves blood circulation and helps fight infection. It is believed that ancestry tears from emotions, although many owners can argue with that. And yet, if a cow cries, then her body is trying to cope with some kind of disease.

Tearing in animals is a reason to consult a veterinarian. It should be remembered that infectious and parasitic diseases can be transmitted from a sick cow or calf to other animals on the farm.
