What if calf has a hernia

Do not think that it is not necessary to treat an umbilical hernia in calves. In fact, this is a serious disease. If the necessary measures are not taken on time, then the animal will suffer, lose its appetite and begin to lag behind in development from peers. However, not every hernia is amenable to conservative treatment. In some cases, only surgery will help. Having noticed the signs of illness in the calf, the owner should know what to do.

What is a hernia

Hernia in calves attributed to non-communicable diseases. This means that a sick animal is not dangerous for its fellow tribesmen and people. What does not diminish the danger of a disease that is congenital or acquired.

The main symptom is a swelling in the abdomen at the navel. When feeling this area, the baby does not feel pain, but through it there is noise in the intestine. The bulge itself is soft, and with more thorough pressure, the hole under it is determined. In shape, it is oval or slightly narrowed, like a slit. This formation is called the hernial ring. Part of the peritoneum protrudes from it, and in severe cases, internal organs.

The cause of such a defect in a newborn calf is a poorly treated, and therefore long-healing, umbilical cord. And the causes of the acquired hernia can be various injuries - the fall of an animal, a blow by a horn, a hoof and any hard object.

Signs of a calf hernia

The calf owner may not notice the presence of an umbilical hernia in a pet. But in order to start treatment on time, one should pay attention to the signs indicating the presence of the disease:

  • the calf does not eat well;
  • the baby has an irregular and difficult stool;
  • the restless behavior of the animal gives way to a depressed state;
  • body temperature over 40 degrees;
  • cardiopalmus.

Having found one or more of the above symptoms, inspect the pet, paying particular attention to the stomach. Trembling muscles may indicate the presence of heat in an animal. Measure the temperature. The norm for a healthy calf - 38-40 degrees.

If all the signs were confirmed and a hernia in a calf was revealed during an external examination, then what should the owner do? The most correct: urgently contact the veterinarian, who will establish an accurate diagnosis.

Help with hands and scalpel

Conventionally, the types of hernias are divided into those that are simply set by hand and those that are surgically removed. Treatment of the former is simpler, but it is applicable only if the hernia is not too large.

First massage is done, then the dropped out part of the peritoneum is simply inserted back into the umbilical ring and sealed with adhesive tape. Previously, the place of the hernia is freed from wool and disinfected with alcohol. Then put on a special bandage, the animal create a calm atmosphere. The dropped out part of a peritoneum over time fix in such position and the disease passes.

Surgery should be done only in a hospital where there is the necessary equipment and provided with sterility.

Local anesthesia is usually used, injecting a calf with novocaine or a similar agent. The doctor calculates the dose based on the weight of the animal.

The essence of the operation consists in amputation of the hernial sac and setting its contents inside the peritoneum. To this end, the surgeon will make one or two incisions depending on the size of the hernial bag. Sutures impose using ligatures (threads of silk, nylon, flax) and removed on the fifth day after surgery.

It is a serious danger to life.

A strangulated hernia is an acute surgical condition when there is compression of the intestine in the hernial ring. As a result, the excretion of feces from the body is hampered or stopped altogether. In this case, the calf is in severe pain and becomes very restless.

Particularly dangerous strangulated hernia entailing necrosis of the intestine. Help in this case should be provided urgently, otherwise there is a risk of death of the animal. It is strictly forbidden to try to independently reduce the restrained hernia in a calf. Due to the development of inflammation and swelling of the tissues, this becomes difficult to do even during surgery.

Only a doctor can treat a strangulated hernia surgically. Sometimes there are cases when during the operation calves of the peritoneum and intestines are detected in the calves. And only an experienced surgeon can make the right decision about the future course of the operation.

They say American scientists

Modern experts continue to study the causes of umbilical hernia in calves. American doctors have concluded that their occurrence is directly related to infections that can enter the body through a non-healing umbilical cord. To make the umbilical cord heal faster, you should use a drying agent, for example, iodine. Then the risk of hernia is significantly reduced. It is also possible to use plastic clips that will not allow germs to get into the body through the navel.

The second cause of the appearance of the disease is called genetics. In New York State, a large number of Holstein calves with congenital umbilical hernia have been identified. Their father was the same sire. In this case, only high-quality selection of breeding animals will help prevent the birth of sick calves.

American experts say that if the hernia is less than three fingers in diameter, then nothing needs to be done with it. By the age of one, it will simply disappear by itself.
