Storage tanks for feed are good, but if you make troughs for rabbits with your own hands, they will exactly meet your needs. Yes, and cheaper. On the types, sizes, methods and materials from which they can be made, read our article. The diet of animals should be varied, which means that different types of devices are needed. Automatic, bunker, flute, nursery - all the details are found below.
Variety of models
The type of rabbit feeder depends on the food that will be put into it. For example, grass and roots, feed, grain or hay.
By design they are divided into:
The first type is the easiest and cheapest. It can be made of plastic pipes, cutting a piece along and finishing the edges. But in such models it is difficult to dose food and not to allow it to be contaminated by animals.
Bunker feeders for rabbits - convenient and practical. They are suitable for almost any feed. It is fed by gravity, the size of the bunker can fall asleep for several days at once.
This automatic feeder for rabbits can not overfeed animals. Grain comes dosed as needed. Adding feed can be done once every few days.
Hay feeders (nursery) provide animals access to hay or grass, but do not allow to scatter and pollute food. They can make bilateral, fixing between the cells.
On the farm, you need to use troughs of different species, the priority is the convenience of the animal.
The feed tank should be safe and comfortable, that is, easy to remove, clean and wash.
All surfaces should be treated so that there are sharp edges and corners. If you decide to build a bunker feeder for rabbits, calculate the volume of the bunker, depending on the number of animals in the aviary.
Drawing bunker feeders for rabbits need to think through especially carefully. So that everyone had enough space, food was served in the right amount, and the animal could not get into the container. The scheme should contain the dimensions and reflect the shape of the structure.
Feeding trough for rabbits from sewer pipes will be cheaper to manufacture, but will not last for a long time. Rabbits try everything on the tooth. Choose material depending on your capabilities and needs.
It can be asbestos-cement pipes. Plastic can also be used, but there is a risk that animals will nibble them. Therefore, it is better not to risk it, but to use such material only for the upper part of the structure, where the eared ones do not have access.
The length of the flute feeder, including from the pipe, is determined by the number of rabbits in the aviary: an average of 10-15 cm per individual. It is better to use a pipe of small diameter - 4-6 cm. To have it conveniently, fix the device at a height of 7-10 cm from the floor.
Gravity feed in tray
Do-it-yourself bunker bunker is an excellent choice for your own household. It may consist of one large bunker, from where the feed enters the tray. Or from several compartments - for a variety of rabbit meal.
If you decide to make such a "table", stock up on materials and tools.
You will definitely need a diagram, so a pencil, paper, scissors and a ruler or tape measure will be useful. Depending on the material you will need:
- drill or hammer;
- nails or screws;
- saw or handsaw (scissors) for metal;
- rivets with riveting or glue gun;
- hammer or mallet.
The bunker model consists of a box where food is placed, and a tray where it goes down gradually. It is better to make the bunker tapering to the bottom, and the tray to provide a limiter.
Hopper feeders can be made of plastic, metal profile or plywood. If you are making a non-metallic model, extend its life by covering the sides of the tray with metal.
Using metal profiles or improvised means you can make bunker feeder for rabbits with your own hands. Drawings will help not to be mistaken with the size. For work you will need: a marker with a tape measure, riveting with a drill, scissors for metal, a square and a metal profile 40x100 mm.
For example, consider step by step how is a small rabbit feeder from the profile:
- study the circuit;
- mark the details directly on the profile;
- cut design elements;
- drill holes for mounting;
- collect the details of the feeder, giving them the desired shape;
- connect elements with rivets;
- process edges with an emery paper, eliminate sharp corners, cutting edges;
- make fixings.
Mounts are made from the feed side. The resulting structure should be easy to remove and conveniently be hung.
In addition, a lid is sometimes attached to the top so that debris or sediments do not enter.
You can make a bunker trough from a plastic bottle. But from it they prepare only the feed bunker itself. For the tray, you need a more durable material so that the animals do not nibble it.
For the manufacture you need: tape measure, drill, screws, scissors. Plastic container for the hopper and sheet metal or profile for the tray.
Mark and cut a tray pattern out of a sheet of metal or profile. Its width should correspond to the width of the neck of the bottle. Assemble the tray and secure the edges with self-tapping screws. Treat the edges and corners with sandpaper.
Take the bottle and cut its neck so that it fits tightly into the tray. Cut off the bottom, there will be laid feed. Insert the resulting part into the tray, neck down. For strength, fasten it on both sides with self-tapping screws.
At the top of the bunker, make two holes and thread the fasteners (wire, rope, plastic tie). Attach the design to the cage door.
Variants of grooved models
Gutter feeders are popular with rabbit breeders. They are simply made, are inexpensive, and you can arbitrarily choose the length of the container. You can bend such a model from a sheet of metal with a mallet, but it is better to use any non-toxic pipes for this purpose.
If you decide to make feeders from a pipe, then remember that in the end you will have two half-pipes. The second can serve, for example, as a drinker.
To make such a model, measure and cut a segment of the desired length, for example 50-100 cm. Cut the pipe in half (lengthwise). Cut two side walls of plastic, wood or metal. Glue or fasten them with self-tapping screws to the end ends of the gutter. Process the edges. Attach attachments for hanging. Is done.
It is better to hang the plastic bird feeder or place it on a wooden support. Do not place it directly on the floor. Rabbits will be able to climb there and spoil the feed.
Hay in manger
Grass and hay must be included in the diet of rabbits. Therefore, the feeder for hay rabbits is also required. Senniki or nurseries for food need animals of any age. It is necessary to provide for their placement when building a cage or arranging a pit.
Clear models are designed triangular (V-shaped) or square, they are made of mesh, wood or metal, the side walls are made of wood or metal. The resulting structures are fixed on the walls or doors of cells.
But it is not necessary to place the nursery on the doors of the cages with youngsters, otherwise the rabbits may accidentally climb and fall out at the time when you fill the dish. Bilateral nurseries can serve as intercellular septa.

How to eat in the pit
If you breed rabbits in a hole, the placement of the feeders will have some peculiarities. For details, see the article "Breeding rabbits in the pits." Groove feeders are poorly suited for pit contents. They are more difficult to clean and fill up the feed is also not very convenient. The best would be the use of bunker models of metal. Especially with several compartments for different types of feed. The size of the bunker should contain a minimum weekly supply of food.
The design is securely fastened so that animals cannot turn it over. The top box is covered with a lid so that the rabbits do not climb into it. At the same time, the self-made device must be mobile so that it can be easily reached and cleaned. Sennik in the pit should be mounted on the wall. It is preferable to use V-shaped models of mesh or metal.
