On the free keeping of rabbits

Among rabbit breeders, breeding rabbits without cages is becoming increasingly popular. This method of keeping eared really many advantages. By themselves, krols are animals that love freedom and an active lifestyle. In an enclosed space, they feel constrained and uncomfortable. Because of this, they fall into a stressful state, show aggression. In the wild, animals are in their natural habitat, which has a positive effect on their health.

Free-range

Growing rabbits in freedom has a number of advantages, and, above all, health. Pets, which are contained in cages, feel much worse in moral and physical terms. These are stresses, depressions, various diseases and the need for vaccinations. In those animals that live in the wild, the problem of vaccination disappears.

The only negative is that if you do not detect any infectious disease in time, the entire population will be harmed. Infections are usually transmitted more slowly through cells.

There are many other advantages of free content, which are also quite significant:

  • ease of feeding (no need to put food in each cage, the animals are practically on the grass);
  • simplicity of cleaning the territory (if there is an open-air cage, then the layer of sawdust and hay is cleaned periodically, 1-2 times a year; and if the content is completely free, then this need disappears altogether);
  • good animal survival of animals with each other (sometimes there may be clashes between males or females during periods of mating or at the time of dividing the territory, and in order to avoid this they are kept separate or left one male to 5-10 females);
  • You can sow the area with necessary herbs and other vegetation, root crops, which feed the rabbits, shrubs.

Judging by the reviews of rabbit breeders, in which animals are grazing freely, they don’t even have to build open-air cages, as the animals do not run away, but get used to the same territory. There are times when rabbits come to feed themselves. At the same time, in the wild, little rabbits calmly feed all the little rabbits, not dividing them into friends and foes.

Living conditions

The free keeping of rabbits still provides for some kind of fence, even if it protects neighboring areas. Of course, it’s good when there is free land where animals can roam (pasture mode). But sometimes you have to build an aviary or a pen, which will resemble the natural environment (this is an aviary method).

Usually, a large pasture is divided into 2-3 parts with a free pasture method.. On one rabbits graze, and on the other you can grow fresh greens. In the captive method provides for feeding in the feeders, but the rabbits are constantly in their natural environment. However, in both cases, constructed places in which animals can shelter from the weather (roof, shed).

For rabbits burrows are very important. They can be made artificial. To do this, a box is buried in the ground to a depth of 1 m, from which a wooden pipe (1.5-2m) goes up. According to her rabbits will climb inside. The lower edge of the pipe, you need to install below the entrance to the box-hole, to avoid pouring water into the nest.

On the territory, you can make various shelters of stones, boards, branches. All this should be in dry, not flooded places. For the winter, their burrows are usually warmed.

The meat is rougher

Some moments of the free content of rabbits are inferior to the cellular mind. On the spread of infections in the livestock has already been mentioned above. There is also information that the crawls who live in freedom have tougher meat than forced animals.

If there is an opportunity to keep rabbits in the aviary, then it should be done thoroughly. Read about it in the article "Peculiarity of keeping rabbits in aviaries". An important stage is the digging of the fence mesh into the ground, approximately 1 m. Sometimes the floor surface is concreted so that the rabbit does not dig a trench. However, digging the land is a characteristic feature of these animals. Therefore, the enclosure can be partially concreted only around the perimeter.

On the free content it is bad that the rabbit is difficult to catch for any treatment, treatment, jigging. Moreover, difficulties with fishing occur when the animal has escaped from the territory.

There may be problems with predators who like to hunt rabbits - birds, foxes, ferrets.

Thorny bushes can be planted around the perimeter of the pasture area and near the holes. Breeding rabbits on a tribe in a free way is also not easy. It is important to control here that the related individuals do not mate. Breeding animals are still kept separately, more often in cages.

Shed - ventilated area

Another option - the content of rabbits in the barn. Cells are not provided. The room looks like a kind of aviary. Plus the fact that such conditions are much easier to provide than to build houses for each individual.

In a barn with a dirt floor, rabbits can dig minks and feel close to their natural habitat. There is an "underwater stone" - groundwater. It is necessary to ensure that their level is not high, otherwise the mink will be flooded. It is good if the barn has any foundation so that the rabbit does not dig.

In order for the rabbits on the earthen floor of the shed not to freeze in the winter, you need to make litter. The premises should be such that all the livestock feels comfortable, moving freely and snout holes. Need good lighting and ventilation.

Outdoor life

The outdoor way of life of rabbits is the same arrangement of a shed as an aviary. For convenience, the whole rabbitry is divided into rooms for the young, the common herd (1 male, 10 females) and the queen cell, where the newborn rabbits and rabbit live. You can make as many departments as you like, for different needs (for individuals for sale, for meat, for culled rabbits), if space permits.

The area adjacent to the barn is taken away for walks. This is a paddock enclosed by a chain-link.

In the barn should be everything you need to keep rabbits - feeders, drinkers, nest-queens. Of the advantages of such habitat of animals, we note that, thus, it is possible to place a larger number of heads than in cages. It is also not difficult to clean the shed from pollution. The outdoor way of keeping is convenient and the fact that it is possible to regulate the livestock by quickly replanting individuals into different compartments. When breeding - this is also a plus, since there is no mixing of blood during mating.

In an unheated barn, rabbits live even in the cold season, maintaining temperatures up to 20 degrees below zero. In addition, there are other ways of keeping eared animals which are described in the articles “Keeping rabbits in sheds” and “Breeding rabbits in pits”.
