Breed overview

The name of the breed suggests that ducks can run well. The runner swims well, but can live without access to the reservoir. To maintain and breed them, no specific conditions or insulated housing are needed. These representatives of the bird kingdom can even walk in the snow. This is a relatively quiet breed, which makes noise only in case of danger. At the same time, the slider does not fly away, if it is scared, but runs away.

This Indian feathered is relatively unpretentious to feed. But for good egg production, the birds need to eat right. Their diet does not differ from the feed for ordinary ducks. The presence of chalk, eggshell and crushed shells in the feed has a positive effect on the condition of the runner. If the duck is all right, then it gains a good weight (females - 1.75 kg, and the male will weigh up to 2 kg).

Origin

According to some sources, this representative of the bird kingdom emerged from the penguin duck, whose birthplace is India. Further, these Indian birds were common in East Asia. In the 19th century, ducks began to be bred in England, and in the 20th Chinese runner appeared in Germany. On the territory of modern Russia, this bird was first introduced in 1926.

Appearance

The body of the duck has an elongated shape, and the chest is rounded. Its plumage is smooth and tight to the body. Coloring is of different types:

  • wild
  • trout;
  • silvery-wild;
  • white;
  • black and others.

A wild-colored drake has an emerald neck and head, which flows into a brown-red chest, not smoothly, but through a white ring. The tail and tail of such a bird are black-green. The color of the wings is dark gray. Wild drake has a green beak. A female with this coloring can boast a brown plumage and a yellow beak.

The trout runner has a non-closed white ring on the green neck. The bosom of such a feathery is colored red, the back is dark, and the wings are gray. The beak of the Indian drake has a green willow shade. The duck of this color has a light brown coloring and orange beak. On the back, throat and abdomen duck plumage is colored in a lighter shade.

The runner drake of silvery-wild color has a red-brown chest and silver belly. The wings of such a bird are white, and the head is black and casts green. The bill may be gray or greenish. The main color of the silver-wild duck is yellowish white.

The white coloring in males and females of the runner is presented in the same way: the white plumage over the whole body and wings. The beak of this bird is lemon yellow. Representatives with black color cast emerald sheen. The beak of the runner is dark green. There are also birds with brown, spotted, blue, pea coloring and runners, the plumage of which is blue and yellow at the same time.

Breeding

The Indian runner is notable for its high egg production (up to 220 eggs per year). For breeding usually use 1 drake and 5 ducks. Most often, they are selected in the fall. Females start laying eggs at the age of 5-6 months. According to some data, white Indian birds start laying eggs in winter, and black individuals prefer to do this in summer. Why? While the cause of this phenomenon has not been established.

The minimum egg weight of this brisk duck is 65-80 g. The color of the shell is most often white. If the rock has a dark color, then the eggshell may be slightly greenish or bluish. Hatchlings grow quickly. When they turn 2 months old, their weight is 1.5 kg.
