The majestic and mysterious bird - the green peacock is now under the scrutiny of the public. One of the subspecies of these birds has almost disappeared, while others are under human protection. Find out all about the great representatives of the avian world in our article.
The green peacock is one of the two existing species of Asian peacocks that live in Southeast Asia (Java, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, China and others). The most comfortable height for these birds is up to 900 m. Today, the status of a bird with greenish-brown plumage is rated as "vulnerable." The reason is that at the end of the 20th century the number of peacocks decreased due to hunting, and today their number equals 15000-30000 individuals.
Birds fall prey not only to humans (for example, farmers in China do not like green birds), but also leopards and tigers. The geography of their habitat is not very wide, but the subspecies of the bird depends on the territory in which the green peacock lives. Today there are 3 main varieties of this breed:
- Indo-Chinese green;
- javanese peacock;
- Burmese green or imperial.
Regardless of the subspecies, birds love subtropical and tropical forests, bamboo thickets and savannas. In Vietnam, birds can be found in dry deciduous forests near the water. Water is a very important component of the comfortable life of such a bird species as the Javanese peacock Therefore, in China and Laos, special nurseries are being built for keeping Asian birds in their natural environment.
Scientists have not yet fully investigated what kind of mating algorithm for these birds. Someone thinks that on average one female has 4 males. But there is a risk that in captivity the peacock chooses one female for itself and fertilizes only her. In one laying can contain from 3 to 6 eggs. It turns out that the bird lays up to 3 clutches per year. Incubation lasts up to a month.
Hatching chicks are large in size and gray in color. They are in a nest on a tree, whose height is 10-15 meters and begin an independent life already at 2 months of age.
This bird has a bright plumage, which has a metallic sheen on the lower part of the neck. The body of such a feathery as a green peacock, large, and legs longer than that of an ordinary peacock. He also has an oblong neck and a small tuft of feathers with fans on his head.
The head of such a bird is brown-green. The neck has a scaly pattern at the bottom, and also a brown-green color at the top. Handsome chest is covered with blue-green feathers, which may be red or yellow spots. Below the back you can see the markings of brown color, and the spots on the cover will be gray. The bird's beak is black and its legs are gray.
What are the differences female from male? There are practically no external differences, only the male has larger sizes, a large tuft on the head (more than the female), and finally, a large and fluffy tail with which he seduces the female. In the female individual there is no such beautiful and lush tail, it is nothing remarkable.
The male can be from 180 cm to 300 cm in length. At the same time, the maximum length of its wings is 54 cm. There are several nuances associated with the color of the plumage, which distinguish different subspecies of birds. The Java Peacock also has a train (140-160 cm) and a blue spot on the wings.
Burmese peacock - the most pale. His neck and chest has a blue-green color and black wings. The head of this variety is different from the color of the neck (usually purple or blue). Indochinese feathered has a very bright face. The total weight of the bird does not exceed 5 kg.
A green peacock prefers to search for food on the ground, shallow water, or near high grass. The diet of such a feathery consists of grains, seeds, reptiles and fruit. Aquatic animals especially love young animals, while adults prefer plant food (buds, leaves) and insects (termites). Sometimes birds can hunt poisonous snakes.
What to feed such a feathery, as the Javanese peacock, if he lives in captivity? It should be food that is rich in animal protein and fats. For the brightness of the plumage and head, crustaceans should be added to the feed (for example, shrimps). It is not superfluous to introduce into the diet feathered squid. The main purpose of such feeding is to provide feathery with access to all the beneficial vitamins and trace elements.
