From spring to late autumn, the meadows of our country abound with various herbs. And rabbits are known to be herbivorous animals. But then the question arises, can we give any grass to a home rodent? In particular, is it possible for rabbits to give wormwood, well known to us for its healing properties? Let's try to understand this issue!

Wormwood in the diet of rabbits

Experienced rabbit breeders know that grass is the basis of the diet for eared animals. Abundantly feed the animals with herbs you need throughout their lives. In addition, feeding rabbits with wild herbs greatly saves money on their maintenance, which makes the process of breeding rabbits a profitable and profitable enterprise. Such weed, like wormwood, cannot be confused with any other, it has a specific, strong smell and bitter taste. She is also known for its healing qualities.

In its composition, wormwood contains vitamin C, carotene, beneficial essential oils, glycosides absintin and anabsintin. Also included are organic acids, tannins and resinous substances. Therefore, we immediately note that it is not just possible to give this plant to rabbits, but it is also necessary! They give aromatic weed for a specific purpose: for the prevention of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, for the removal of accumulated gases. And also to stimulate the appetite and to get rid of worms.

Rabbits are known for their weak stomachs, so wormwood is a real panacea for them. It is also a preventive measure against coccidiosis - an invasive disease caused by unicellular parasites. However, it is worth remembering that, like any medicine, wormwood should not be given constantly, otherwise the effect of it may decrease.

It is better not to feed it in its pure form. You can offer rabbits forbs, which will include healing herbs. It is also worth remembering that wormwood in nature is represented by many species and not all of them are beneficial for eared pets. You should beware of wormwood-vermouth and Chernobyl, they are poisonous to your animals and can lead to severe poisoning.

How to feed?

Most breeders prefer to feed the rabbits with wormwood in admixture with other herbs and ensure that its amount does not exceed 40% of the total green diet. Too much plant in the diet can cause nervousness in the animal. Like any other grass, it should not be fed freshly mown, it is better to pre-dried. Do not give the rabbits dirty or spoiled grass. It is also not suitable for wormwood food, which grows near landfills or shoulders, as it may contain large amounts of carcinogenic substances.

But the plant that grew on your own site can be given to the rabbits. Choose as a feed a young grass, in it it is more than proteins and it is less difficult for digestion of cellulose. It is optimal to give a greater amount of medicinal herbs in the spring and autumn periods. In the fall, it helps cleanse the body of rabbits from parasites before hibernation.

Fresh

Do not forget that the diet of your rabbits should be varied, so give them an aromatic plant in combination with other herbs. Rabbits gladly eat white, black and spreading wormwood. It is best to choose young shoots, their rabbits are consumed with great appetite, because in a young plant there is more carotene. As a plant grows, the amount of essential oils increases and it becomes more cloying. Due to the astringent effect that the plant also has, it can be given if you accidentally feed the rabbits with poor-quality feed or rotted grass.

Fragrant herb neutralizes adverse effects and prevents poisoning. As a rule, wormwood is chosen in the feed by breeders engaged in rabbit breeding on an industrial scale. However, owners of ornamental or dwarf rabbits should also not forget to include this healing herb in the diet of their eared pets. You can and should do this, just be careful and in smaller doses.

In dried form

Harvest wormwood and for the winter. The process of harvesting can be conducted throughout the spring and autumn period, the main thing is that the plant was young and juicy. It is better to have it without buds or at the very beginning of the flowering phase. The mowed grass is dried, but not much, the resulting hay should retain a rich color and pleasant aroma. It is best to dry the wormwood in attics or under sheds, spreading it is not very thick.

Choose for the preparation of wormwood bitter. That she has the beneficial properties for which it should be included in the diet of rabbits. But, if some kind of poisonous wormwood gets into your grass, it's not scary. When drying, the toxicity of the plants disappears.
