Why does diarrhea appear in bees and how to treat it?

Many beekeepers are faced with the phenomenon of bee excreta. In this case, the causes of this disease is not so much. The main one is overcrowding with fecal masses. Most often there is diarrhea in bees in the spring, but sometimes blotting can be found in the winter. Causes, as well as methods of treating diarrhea, let's consider together.

Causes of diarrhea

In the spring

From about the beginning of the 80s and almost until today, many beekeepers thought that diarrhea is caused by an excess of pollen in honeycombs and honey. Most experts argued that pollen was bad for insects when it was hibernating, so they were advised to feed sugar syrup in early spring. However, this opinion has sunk in the summer and today we know that, on the contrary, the best food is pollen and high-quality honey. Without a glove, brood will not be fully grown and adults will be weak.

But bad food certainly leads to diarrhea, especially crown, immature honey, fermented. The best option would be the choice of light varieties of honey or candi. A weak family can die from diarrhea before spring comes, and this can happen with good food. For example, a reduced temperature can affect this, leading the insects to active movement. Untimely circling and cleaning the intestines also leads to diarrhea and, of course, the disease Nosematosis.

In addition, it is worth noting that Dr. E. Alfonsus of Wisconsin claims that heightened moisture in the diet also leads to bee diarrhea. This moisture evaporates and collects in the form of condensate on the walls of the hive. If the insects still drink a lot of water, it will certainly lead to liquid stool. Liquid honey, which flows out of the combs and forms a puddle, leads to an intensive diet, which, too, without early departure is fraught with diarrhea. As you can see, there are a lot of reasons.

In winter

Diarrhea can occur not only in spring, but also in winter, and there are also quite a few of its causes. For example, unnecessary anxiety, when rain hits the roof, birds pound or its walls gnaw mice — all this causes nervousness and the bees begin to eat a lot. As you know, there is no longer do without getting dirty. It is impossible to disturb insects in late autumn.

Diarrhea also occurs frequently in the wagon due to non-compliance with the temperature regime. If the winter is long, there is no proper ventilation, it is stuffy, the bees also eat a lot and excessive moisture is formed. But in this case it will not help to ventilate the hothouse or cool the hive; it just needs bees to give more water.

In winter, diarrhea leads to a lack of perga. This is especially associated with large families who tend to brood and from the lack of food they become nervous and anxious. If the hives are on the street, poorly insulated, then the cold of bees will also lead to soiling. In the autumn it should be ensured that the insects go to winter with the uterus. Its absence will lead to excessive feed consumption and family death.

Also, do not forget that during the overwhelming of insects, Nosematoz, Salmonellosis or Amebiasis can prevail. This will also cause smudging of the hive. The only way to salvation - is the timely treatment of disease.

How to treat?

In diarrhea, bees have watery, foul-smelling, light yellow or dark feces. With special severe forms of the disease, feces become almost black. The abdomen of insects often increases, and the body itself becomes shiny, lethargic and dark. Some individuals try to crawl out of their summer spots, covering the flight board with spots. Since we have already considered all the possible causes of this phenomenon, let's talk about the methods of treatment.

  1. So, first of all, any treatment begins with prevention. So that the feed does not become watery and excess moisture does not accumulate in the hive, it is necessary to make the upper gates and open them from time to time in winter and especially in spring.
  2. It is desirable to provide families with fodder extensions with good quality, well-sealed honey. Stock up on pollen.
  3. In winter, the family must leave with a young uterus, so that it does not die during wintering.
  4. The air in the nest should be dry.
  5. It helps sometimes to solve the problem in spring batch southern bees. This should be done if the family is weak.
  6. Carry out prevention and treatment of Nosema and other diseases, provide insects with peace and quiet.
  7. If diarrhea begins, you should proceed from its cause and try to solve the problem as soon as possible. Helps in the treatment of giving high-quality honey, pollen, reducing moisture.
